1980 toyota need motor info

i bought a 80 toyota 4x4 it has the 20r and it started knocking i need to know what motors i can put in it and what motors wouldn't take much mods to do so...

i was thinking about putting the 22r in the truck but then i was thinking about maybe putting the v6 out the newer toyota in there. any ideals ?

my dad said some thing about a stright 6 i belive its the 4me motor would that work?

no it will not with out an adapter bellhousing. i sure the heck would not run a 4cyl tranny with anything with that much power. tons of options out there for motors. the 22r (or re) will bolt up to the original 4 speed that came with the 80 or you could upgrade to a 5 speed from a 22r (81-83) that would be the same length so you would be able to keep the factory tranny cross member location.
do some searches you can put a BUNCH of different motors in there with the right combination of motor/tranny/bellhousing conversions. (ex ford/chevy v8s, vw diesels, chevy/buick v6, and this list goes on ........
not 100% but i think the r150 tranny has the same bellhousing pattern as the supra I6 motors.

perfect oppertunity to build a hi-brid engine .. use the 22r block(81-84) and put your 20r head on it .. EVERYTHING will bolt up and you can keep the double roller T/chain .. cam and header ... works very well with this .

I did this years ago .. and was a great engine ..

i'm building a Trekker now , and for this one , I wanted much more HP .. so I went with a 5V-zfe with a supercharger .. it's all custom and lots of work to get it in there , but well worth it in my opinion ..

check out the link in my sig.

i have a balanced 20r that will eventually be a 20R-TE with an 83 celica EFI head. lol. my truck was a 22r and 4 spd (all stock for 81) and now it's a 20r with a 5 sp. everything "r" series will have the same bellhousing and mounts (8r, 18r, 18rg, 19r, 20r, 21r, 22r, 22re, 22rec, 22rte, etc.....) and supra turbo trannies are R154's.

if it has an '87 5 speed in the truck it will have had the crossmember modified in some way as the L-series transmissions in the 1st Gens are only 21.25" long, the W-series found in the '87's are 25.5" long or so.

If you go with a Toy V-6, don't even bother with a 3.0, go straight to the 3.4, check out slacker's trekker build thread. It is gonna be a lot of work.
