So I have an '86 4x4 22re and when I get up to speed (usually 50+ mph) I feel a vibration in the shifter. If I put it in neutral and coast at high speed it gets worse. I put new u-joints on it about two years ago and checked the nuts on the rear 3rd and the t-case. I've heard it could be pinion bearing so, how would I check that. Also I noticed my rear wheel bearings have a hint of play in them. Could that be it as well?

 

no one has a clue? I just don't want to spend a ton of money chasing this one down.

 

Im not sure how to check the pinion bearing, but i know bad wheel bearing can cause a vibration. When i got my 86 4Runner it had over 300.000 miles on the original rear wheel bearings and they were beyond shot, they were so loose they almost came a part in my hand. So check all of your wheel bearing and if there loose replace them.

 

yea I thought it might be the bearings but ive also heard that they would be making a noise if they were bad

 

alright well, I took my driveline to advance drivline and they pretty much had to rebuild the thing... new u-joints, new slip yoke, a new flange, new tubing because of a dent, and they balanced and painted the whole thing. Needless to say they did a good thorough job and cleaned it up. I bolted it back up and I still have the vibration. Which leads me t two more possible causes.

The rear output bearing on transfer case or the tranny mount. I'm betting on the output bearing.

So, should I just get a used t-case or should I attempt to replace the bearing?

 

I'm assuming stock ride height? no suspension lift?


how old are the tires? what's the chances they could be out of balance?



is it a low frequency kind of oscillating vibration, or is it more of a higher frequency buzzing vibration?

if you have any play in the output bearing it will vibrate. mine is doing this right now. I got a replacement t-case off Ebay from a 93 with low miles for 185 shipped

 

Mine was vibrating when coasting, and thunked while putting it into gear and under initial load. I went through the u-joints, greased the slip joint, and checked the wheel bearings, which did nothing. Turned out my third member had a bunch of play at the pinion bearing. Replaced that and the vibration was completely gone, and the thunk reduced, but not gone. I also have play at the output flange of the transfer case, so that's the next step for me, and hopefully the thunk is gone. But for me the t-case isn't causing any vibration, at least nothing I can feel over my mud terrains...

Try grabbing your pinion flange and moving it vertically to see if you have any play at all. Mine was very noticeable. Sounds like you have stock gears so this is a pretty cheap fix from a junkyard. Just do the whole third member if you find any problems.

 

Oh and the pinion vibration was a very deep sound, almost more felt than anything else.

 

thnaks for the help thus far guys. Ifound that my rear wheel bearings were absolutely worn out and upon replacing them I still have a vibration. Most of the play is in the rear output flange on the transfer case so I'm gonaa start there. Although, The nut on the on my rear diff flange is stakes but is a little losse I have noticed. I fI tighten that is there a preload or specifice torque value?

 

turns out it was my rear diff also. as the t-case did not solve my vibration. Put another diff in it and my vibration is gone. also my diff had milky oil and look like it had never been changed. I really hate slackers who can't bother to change oils when needed. Whom ever owned this truck before me sucked ass.

If you don't mind telling how much did they charge you to rebuild your drive line? and is it a two piece or one?

 

Advance Driveline in Orlando did the work and and they charged me $350.00 That Included new u-joints replacing one of the flanges a new slip yoke replacing the entire tube and a high speed balance. They also painted it black as well. Im with you on the output flange. I don't think it is my problem.
