Tire Pressure on new wheels

Tire Pressure on new wheels
I am at a loss...I can't figure out the best tire pressure to keep my tires at now that I have 8" wide wheels versus 7"...should I keep it the same? I was running them at around 35psi and just seemed good to me...when I got them back from the shop they were at about 31 hot...that 35 that I used to keep them at was hot too. They are lookin low and I am going to need to pump them up and was wondering what you guys thought I should make it.
They are the wheels and tires in my sig below
I will probably just air them up to the same pressure that I had them at before...unless you guys reccommend otherwise.
Thanks guys,
Fink

I would think that theoretically, if you have a wider tread patch, then weight is being distributed over a larger area, and you could then lower the pressure a couple lb's from stock and be alright. However, I think i'd keep them at stock pressure, because I'm sure gas mileage will suffer enough as it is, and would be much worse at anything lower. Best thing is to watch your tread as you get some miles on them. If they're wearing more on the outsides then your pressure is too low, if they're wearing more in the middle, then your pressure is to high. If you corner at a higer rate of speed, might ought to put a little "extra" air especially in the fronts to keep the tire from rolling over and wearing down your "edge tread" so badly.

Thanks for the reply Kyle.
On that note, does anybody know the reccommended pressure for 31x10.50 BFG A/T's? I would guess its somewhere between 32-35...I will probably put them up to around 35 to ensure better gas mileage and cornering protection.

First you look at your vehicle's recommended pressure. This is going to be the minimum you should run. Second you look at the maximum psi of the tires you are running, shouldnt run more than that. To get a softer ride with not as much control run close to minimum. For a more controlling and a bit harsher ride more to maximum. For a tire with max 35psi it makes it easy, not much adjusting can go there. With a tire with max 50psi, soft ride would be from min to 33psi and a more controlling ride would be from 36 to 40 psi. And anything in between is some of both worlds. 40 and up would be for carring loads. This is what I have learned from working in a tire shop for about a year. Hopefully that helps.

The larger tires have very large sidewalls (which tend to roll over in a turn) so you need a high pressure to ensure that the truck handles properly and doesn't steer like a boat. I run 35 psi hot myself on my michelin LTX's but that is the max allowable pressure. So you need to look at your max rating, warm up the tires on the highway a bit and inflate to that....or close to it. Then when you hit the trails you can deflate a bit to give you better traction.

The max pressure is 45psi as stated on the sidewall of the tire. I am not sure of the recommended pressure or minimum pressure but my guess would be around 30-32. I have called BFG about this before and I believe they said 32. I have it at 35 right now and by looking at the tire tread it seems that they are sitting right. It does handle differently. I also believe that I have a smalll leak in my front right tire...all the other tires were +/- 30psi..the front right one was at 17psi. So I inflated that one to about 37 just so I can have a little bit of room between inflating.
I guess I could try inflating to 40 and see how that does but that is awfully close to the maximum psi for me...I am very comfortable at 35.
That's some really good information you posted...thanks. What do you think about my decision to go with 35? Also, is there anyway you can check the recommended/minimum pressure on some 31x10.50 BFG Radial All Terrain's at your tire shop? If not thats all right I will just call BFG tomorrow since they are probably closed today.
So as of now they should all be at 35 hot...I will try and keep a close eye on the front right one as it tends to deflate faster than the other ones and if the leak gets bad enough I will take it in to have it repaired. Thanks again for all the help and if anybody has anything else to add go for it...the more info we post in here the more it will help others out who have this same question.

your minimum would be the truck recommended pressure. For example, if the pressure is should be 28 psi in the front and 30 in the rear than that would be the minimum you should run. As for off road you can air down a lot more how much that i dont know yet seeing i owned my runner for 3 weeks and driven offroad only once. As for 35 if you like that well that all that matters.
