Rear axle seal

Noticed this morning my rear axle in my 84 4wd is leaking gear oil from the hub. Brake drum is full of grease. Not sure what part(s) I need to fix never done one before. Just replace outer seal or inner and bearing?

just a thought... the breather port on the axle might be clogged with mud or something causing preasure to build up and push out the seals.

Well if the diff breather is clogged, yes it needs to be unclogged but the axle seal damage is done, so those need to be fixed as well. Do you have a Diff breather extnsion on?

as above ..
sometimes the diff breather is the cause .. if it is `cloged` the pressure will have to vent somewhere else , so usually its the pinion seal , but i have seen the axle seal `go` as well .. but 9 times out of 10 , it is because of the axle bearing is worn out ..

replace the bearing .. if you go to a bearing store , you can get them for $25.00 + an outer seal for about 5 bucks ..

If your brake shoes are soaked in oil .. you will need to replace those as well ..

hope that helps
