loud clunk in 4wd

to start off ive been searching the forums for awhile and cant find what im looking for...anyways i just got an 88 yota about a month ago and the guy i got it from said it had a blown hub. today i replaced the hub but when i put it in 4wd it makes a terrible clunking sound when im just creeping. broken axle shaft? blown diff? how do i check for a broken axle? i had it jacked up and rotated the tires around locked and unlocked but it didn't seem to bind up...im new to this whole ifs thing so any input would help thanks
