Complete loss of power in 95 4runner, possible problems?

Hi all,

Just bought a 95 4Runner back in January, 170k. Been trying to fix it up (it was a repo, and not necessarily the best cared for). It was running fine until Sunday.

We were on our way back from a festival, about 45 minutes from home, and the engine completely died. No warning, no sputtering, no weird smells, no smoke, the engine just shut off. The lights stayed on, and the radio, but we had no power, and eventually coasted to a stop on the side of the road.

After a few minutes of figuring out what to do, we ended up calling a tow truck....$220 later we got the truck to a mechanic in town and got a ride home the rest of the way from a friend.

So, anyone got any bright ideas about what the heck could be wrong with it? I'm hoping to be prepared when the mechanic calls and try to figure out what I can do myself versus what I should have them do, depending on what the problem is.

Timing belt and drive belts were done back in February, doubtful that any of those could be the problem. There hasn't been any slipping from the tranny, and tranny fluid looks fine.

pull your alternator and have the local part shop test it. thats free and easy enough to check. Mine did the same last year. radio and lights would work but the engine would die. I kept jumping it and it would runlong nuff till the battery died but left enough juice for lights for the itme being. keep doing that and eventualy the lights go out also.

Lights and all still on. I'd check the EFI main fuse, first. If that goes, no power to the ECU.
