j4nasdoro's 1993 4Runner Build-Up Thread
Hey, i have a 1993 4runner and recieved it when i got my license to drive. My mom bought it new back in the day, so i basically grew up with it. A few months ago it started having a few problems: Low idle, bad steering. I rebuilt the steering pump which is made the steering like new again, and i seafoamed it a month after the car was handed over to me. Maybe another month passes by and the car starts blowing out white smoke horribly, the car overheats, and it started smelling. It turned out to be the headgasket. I ordered the top end gaskets from engnbldr and began tearing apart my car. Note, i am only 16 and have little experience in taking apart an engine.
Here is my 4runner

And here is the work i finished today, i took out the radiator, fan, pulleys, powersteering pump, and intake.

Very cool..... Like everyone else said it's good to see a young guy working on their car, it'll make you appreciate it more. Not to mention, have more respect for it, if you have to fix it yourself every time it breaks you'll take better care of it.
I started working on cars when I was 16, and I haven't stopped since...( I'm 40). I hope you catch the bug like I did and enjoy the feeling of saticfaction of being able to say "I did it myself".
Just a little advice, make sure you have the manual for the vehicle, you keep track of everything you take off by labeling or putting the pieces into seperate ziplock bags and take pics(you will have a visual record of how things are supposed to look when all back together, and when something becomes impossible( trust me there will be times when u just can't get a bolt off or a part off because of space or rust) and you feel like you just can't do it, walk away, take a deep breathe or leave it for the next day when your mind is refreshed and the frustration has gone. Then try it again, and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions from people who have experience with what your attempting.
Good luck and have fun.... And keep us updated!!!
Good luck

thanks for the advice! Yeah, i got my haynes manual and took the blue tape and started labeling and whatnot. My box of parts from engnbldr came in today and i was surprised on how many parts they were really going to ship to me. Its already been decided that im going to buy some doug thorley headers! I live in cali so i need some that will pass emissions.

very small update
My doug thorley headers are now ordered and should be coming in august and my timing belt should be coming in soon also. Feeling pretty excited on bringing it back together. I got the heads off and they are going to the machinist soon.

Well I sent the heads to the machinist and i wont really be getting it until next week. My headers will be arriving in august!
But school starts on wednesday and i still have to do my summer assignments. I need help or advice on how to get the deck clean. I have been trying to get some black stuff off from around the holes where the coolant passes through. I have tried gasket remover liquid and a putty knife...

Thanks guys. Yeah im enjoying it, but the only problem i have is not having the correct tools at times, going back and forth to the store, and school which is getting in the way of building at times because i have year round school and it starts early. cant seem to find a 10mm 1/2 drive socket though....
