I just got my truck back after 6 months of hunting parts and repairs, but I have a persistent problem that I can't figure out.

After I installed crossover steering, I thought the road manners of the truck would be greatly improved. The didn't. With 4.5" of lift and 35's, the truck still wanders on the road.

I have replaced the gearbox with another used one and nothing changed.

The front end has been rebuilt(knuckles, etc..) and its been aligned.

However, my front springs are getting very flexible. They are old Downey springs and one side has a slight negative curve to it.

To rule out that the crossover steering is operating as it should, what should I check? What angles might be out of whack? What type of caster numbers should I get from an alignment?

If my steering an alignment check out, then I am going to replace the springs, but I think the springs are causing most of my problems.

Caster angle and toe in would be the first things to check.

 

do you have a steering stabilzer?
probably removed the track bar, I did, every one does.

does it wander on all roads? my wanders on some roads more than others, more noticeable when i can notice ruts in the road from heavy trucks if I run a 33 x9.50 I have no issues but the 35x13.50s on a 10" rim make a noticeable difference to the steering.

spring bushings in good shape? like you think, probably related to the springs...

 

I didn't solve the problem, but it is much better. I forgot that the previous owner had put on Rancho adjustable shocks. I turned them up to the highest setting and the ride is much better.

Its very "bouncy" on the road, but I guess you have to find a compromise between flexible on the trail and road manners. Stiffer springs are in order when I get over the last repair bill.
