does anyone know if an o-ring or anything more than FIPG is used to seal the upper water outlet (the one that the upper radiator hose clamps to on the engine side of the hose) to the #2 idler pulley the one between the cam gears? i haven't torn into it but i found these pics from the net. toyota of dallas says there is no o-ring used there just FIPG but why is there a channel in the water outlet? if there is an o-ring used there does anyone know the toyota part number for it. thanks in advance.

 

When I took mine off there wasn't an o-ring, just a bunch of gunk I had to scrape off. Used high temp silicone when I put it back together, I wouldn't copy me on that because I didn't do my homework before slapping it on there.

I've been told one gets put there from factory and that they don't "produce" the replaceable part anywhere else.(Honestly I've never seen one) And people take em out and just RTV it.... Its not such a big deal for leaks and any silicone applied nicely to it will be fine. Due to the way its made it does not bring much an issue to leaks....sooo.. A lil bead of silicone will hold it untill the next time you take it off.

 

Mine was also filled with FIPG when I took it apart. The groove is there to allow the "Form In Place Gasket" to make an O ring instead of just a thin seal. I used the Toyota FIPG on mine when I did the head gaskets a few years back. No leaks to this day!

The FSM says FPIG. There is no o-ring.

 

You should read the FSM, which explains clearly. You need to remove the old gasket sealant from that groove, and then when installing, put a 2-3mm bead of sealant, or "FIPG" as the FSM calls it, around that groove.

Lots of folks on Yotatech use Permatex Ultra Grey, cheap and easy to find; Hylomar, expensive and hard to find; or a very few others. The Permatex Ultra Grey is available at AutoZone and is not the same as Permatex Ultra Blue, and not RTV.
