Well not knowing what went wrong, is a problem in itself. If you don't know how they got messed up how can you prevent this from happening again? Were they making noise and you kept driving? Did you have any inkling something was wrong? When they failed, how DID you know? What kind of wheeling do you do? Mudd, fast, Rock, slow? Do you have a rear diff breather extender? Did water get into your diff? How often do you change your diff oil, or look inside of there?

See this will help many of us give input as to what kind of money you should put back into your diff.

I'm not making fun, just need some more info here as to how you think your rear diff failed, and where it failed.

Um YEAH! Here's the deal. If you do the same thing again, or install new gears without knowing what happened, the same thing may just happen again costing you loads of money...

I assumed as much. What speed? Though this may not matter as much as the above. The mudding part can lead to a broken diff a lot faster than rock crawling.

Naughty Naughty, lets not be mocking the staff

Looks to me like your pinion bearing wore out to the point where it allowed your pinion gear to touch the differential carrier. Then things started breaking.

If the case isn't chowdered, you can just have a new gear and bearing set stuffed back in there. If it is, you will have to get a new diff and have it rebuilt/regeared to your specs.

Well i was looking at doing sas soon and i found a guy selling both axle from and 82 with 5.29 gears and lockrite locker with 400 miles on them for 800$ ...imma be spending almost that much on the rear axle to rebuild it? Think it a good deal or no, he will let me take it apart also to look inside?

Pinion bearing wore out and the crush sleeved crushed and carved a nice set of grooves in your carrier. Done.

Rebuild your diff with a solid pinion spacer and get someone to build your diff who has a clue what they are doing.

x3 - same thing happened to me and AxleIke due to the torque of dual cases. I would imagine full throttle mud assaults with big tires are what spell doom for yours. Be sure to use a solid spacer and really crank up the carrier bearing preload. See www.gearinstalls.com for more info on how to build a diff to take abusive use.

I would also recommend you check your housing very carefully and make sure it isn't bent.

You are a prime candidate for the Front Range Offroad full-float conversion kit.

The 82 rear axle is 3" narrower than your current axle. I would just take the 3rd out and put it in your current housing.

pinion barring failure for sure, it had to have been doing that for a while to wear through your carrier enough to break it. your fault for not keeping up on your stuff..

+1 on just swapping the third..
