Best way to remove old gaskets safely?

Hello there, I am in the middle of a head gasket/timing chain cover replacment on a 1986 4runner. This site has been a great resource for me and has given me a lot of confidence (so thanks to all those who post!) I have started to remove the old gaskets from the intake etc. and find it is hard not to gouge the aluminum. I am using a razor blade scraper that I bought from the local parts store. It may be that these "gouges" are nothing to worry about...they are more or less scratches that I cannot feel as I run my finger over them. Is there another way to remove the smaller bits of gasket? Fine sandpaper etc? Also I wanted to mention that wearing the Princeton Tec Apex headlamp makes a great shop light!!! Especially if you dont have electric to your garage!!!
Thanks everyone,
Eric

These work pretty well. Just make sure to get rid of all the dust they create, lest the dust starts to score parts.
