hey ive got an 86 4runner with a 22re thats having some issues. so my trucks been running fine until i drove about 25 freeway miles when it had a really rought idle(it was raining if that has anything to do with it). i then drove it back home and it wouldnt idle at all. the truck starts up fine but wont idle and shakes pretty bad. under maybe 2500 rpm it shakes. i tried letting it run for a bit to see if it would run better when it was warm but ther was a burning smell coming from the engine so i let it die. could this be the air flow sensor? or a major vacuum leak? timing? plz help!

 

best bet is to get under the hood and check. look over all the electrical connections and start spraying some WD40 in all of them. then listen for vacuum leaks while someone else holds the idle up. good luck man..

 

i tried spraying vacuum hoses while i held the idle up and it didnt change anything. does the symptoms i described sound like a vacuum leak? thanks

 

Doesn't sound like a vacuum leak. How did this problem start? Was it slow or sudden?

It sounds ignition related to me. Pull the distributor cap and check for water. If that's dry, throw a timing light on it. Follow the procedure by jumping the two specified connections in the diagnosis harness. Should be 5 degrees BTDC, but check under the hood to make sure.

If that doesn't get you anywhere, better check compression.

Thanks man! So I don't know if this is normal or if I'm just stupid but I can't find the diagnostics box to jump the terminals. Is it not under the hood sumwere? But I noticed the problem aftr driving for about 20 miles in the rain. And after driving it home it had gotten hella worse.
