need help during shifter bushing install

hey,

i just installed new shifter bushings on my 90 4runner automatic. Im putting it all back together,but I cant get the 4x4 lever onto the link its supposed to be on. Any ideas on how to make it easier? my knuckles will appriciate the help.thank you

wait what bushing on a auto are you replacing ?

the bushings on the shaft of the gear lever[P,R,N,D,etc.]..the rubber ones.

so I got it on,but the metal peice thats inserted in the rubber grommet popped out.Will i have any trouble without that peice?

I took off the longer linkage down the 4by shifting rod near the driver side of the trani (bolt together linkages), its ALOT easier than the connection under the shifter itself, but now that you already took that apart... goodluck :S and maybe get some help from someone with really small fingers.. but fyi for next time.

thanks for the advice.

well i got it all back together.shifts like new.now there is a little slop in the 4x4 lever because of that missing metal peice of the bushing.=(

No Prob Just hope they lasts you the life of the truck.. those bushings are a pain!
