what to do with my turdbo 4runner

I have an 88 4runner that has an exceptionally clean interior and a straight body. The 22re turbo motor has around 60k (224k on body) on it and it is a TURD. I have to get some power out of this thing or do something with it. I am debating the following:

1. selling

2. swapping a lexus v8 or supra motor or vortec v6 or whatever I can get for cheap.

3. rebuilding this turd with stronger parts and a bigger turbo. More then likely I would need a different tranny which is fine because I hate the automatic anyway.... advice?

thanks!

a 5spd swap would be a good improvement and it should cost under $1000.

I have an 86 4x4 22-rte. I have no issues with power. We did cook the turbo core red hot and weld it with (nickel rod $15.00/lb). Machined the waste-gate port(elbow grease). all new seals, bushings, and all the other junk that came with the kit ($60.00). Also I did replace the fuel pump. The one in it did work, but had only about 20 psi. I installed one that pushes 65 psi. That did the trick!!! Kev

Put a CT26 on it, or 7M swap.

Sell the motor, get money, build a 2jz or 7m and swap in a 5sp. Then have a 4runner that will rip past most cars!

Go for the 5 speed swap, very easy and cheap mod. You will fall in love with your 4Runner all over again.

keep the turbo motor, if it is slow then their is something wrong. unless your used to driving a car.... but your truck has the most power potential of any motor that ever came in that truck, except maybe dropping 10grand into the diesel. get some injectors, fuel pump, exhaust, 5speed and some turbo work. you will be happy for sure.

My 87 turbo 4runner has abt 40000 on it. With a garret turbo on it. And it has an amazing amount of power with the auto trans. I want to put a manual in it. But for a 4cyl. This thing kicks ass. Way better than my 22re that was bored out with a cam in it.
