Help 98 4runners problem

Hi all, we have a 98 3.4 auto 4runner with 180K now. Ran flawless till comming home from a a 3K mile trip months ago at which point when we stopped at a light it idled so low and rough it almost died, months went by and an occasional and more frequent surge or hesitation happens crusing or so,and if under power it feels worst yet, feels like its an uneven multi cylinder missfireing till you hit just over 3200 rpm and its clears up.
The hubby did factory Toyota plugs, wires and a fuel filter which seemed to make some power but did nothing for the hesitation. Its never thrown a code or CEL either, so if we took it in for a diagnosis how will they find the problem without taking endless hours and charges searchin. Choices are slim here, last indy that smogged our 3.4 Taco prerunner said it was time for a tune up,wires plugs that kinda stuff and said a $1000 should cover it....yeah Im sure it would .......scumbags.

Hmmm. Not sure, either way you will probably end up replacing some parts. If you do end up needing some parts you could save some by buying from 1sttoyotaparts.com I have used them before and they saved me quite a bit. Just make sure to order everything at once to save on the shipping.

I had something like this on my Taco, It turned out to be one of the three coil packs was going. I did the full tune-up too, but it still had the same low end hesitation/miss you described. One new coil pack solved the problem for me. Hope it helps you.
