Before I go out and buy an OBD II cat, I wanted to ask all the questions I can to assure I get the right one.

First, I am in California, and need to get this thing street legal, so that means I will be needing to referee it. I haven't started, but just doing some homework right now.

I called my local referee's office, and they said I do not need the actual OE OBD II cat, but any California-certified OBD II cat will pass the visual. With that said, I want to make sure I pass, so I'm not going to buy just any ol' cat.

I checked Muffler Tech's website (http://www.gotduals.com/), and the website says that as of 1/1/09, there were some changes made to new cats being purchased.

Now, here are the questions:
1) Has anyone passed the referee inspection with an aftermarket cat?
2) What size inlet and outlet will I need? From what I read, I find anything between 2 1/4" to 2 1/2". So which is it?

I have and I used 2 1/2 in/out.

 

I think that every ref would be different but mine said I had to use the FACTORY cat that came with the donor vehicle.

Luckily, i had the whole donor. I would go talk to YOUR ref in YOUR area since he will be the only opinion that matters. He may have a list of approved/unapproved cats

The ECM you use will determine what vehicle model applies to your swap, since that is where the ref will get the vehicle information from.

There are no CARB legal aftermarket cats for the 4Runner, so the OEM cat is the only approved cat you can use. The Tacoma is slightly more flexible, since there are a few approved aftermarket cats. I've still got my OEM cat and cross-over just in case.

 

Wow, $1200 for a pair of aftermarket cats.

 

Did you have two cats? From what I'm reading, the 1996 to 2001 California Tacomas have two cats.
