Not bad for 10 bucks into it with paint, and it's functional!

Still got some work to do on it

why thank you, im working on getting the bulge insert, and then modifying it to be an actually useful hood scoop.

A snorkel and a functional hood scoop?

I'm curios what/how you are going to make the scoop functional.

Nice score! I nabbed my scooped hood on CL for $50; I had it Line-X'd for $100.

I made mine functional by simply cutting away the OEM plastic "catch" at a slight angle to allow air to enter and cool the supercharger. You know what's crazy? I did some extensive temperature testing (in Phoenix mind you) and I found that the hood "scoop" actually does best letting hot air OUT, not cooling the engine while at speed. Kind of counter-intuitive huh? So where it shines is with the reduction of heat soak. I found that the heat reduction was best from it at idle (duh) and under about 20MPH (I am pretty sure that as the vehicle slowed the air begins to enter into the scoop rather than pass over it).

OK, sorry for the long post but I thought it would be helpful.

I think by functional, he merely means its open instead of blocked off like from the factory. It lets a marginal amount of air in, which slightly cools the motor down.

Its functional...but only a tiny bit

Nice look, but shouldn't that "scoop" be for air intake into the engine (i.e. through the air intake to mix with fuel to burn)? As it is now, it looks like a scoop that will catch water when it rains.

Maybe the Venturi effect will pull hot air from the engine room, but I wonder how well it can work. Will it disrupt the air flow that should go through your radiator to cool your engine? Enlighten me.

i thought bout trying to take the plastic that blocks the hood scoop to make it "functional" but im wondering isnt is bad bc water can get into the engine area while its raining and the engine is running and hot?

All the scoop is doing right now is drawing in some cooler air into the engine bay, next highway trip I have I should be able to tell if its helping or not with keeping the temps down.

Water already gets into the engine area. Im going to get the bulge insert and cut out the back and make it directional so water goes down towards the drivers side of the engine.

Well, I live in Seattle now and have never had an issue with water in the engine compartment with the scoop being functional. I did make a block-off plate that can be installed in about 10 seconds though. Sometimes I forget to put it on, but have never had an issue or any significant water in the engine bay.

Guess how much the insert for the scoop is?

I did the same thing as you, got the scoop for free. Went to find an insert and OMG... Expensive

edit: here is my scoop job

There are two black Runners around here with scoops. I happen to chase both down in one day. One guy said no way to a trade (Plus cash), the other said she will talk to her husband about it when he gets back in a few weeks. If that doesn't work, I'll have to head up to Anchorage and look in a junk yard to see if there is anything around...

One bad thing about Alaska.... Not too many junk yards around...

The problem with an open scoop is it also allows dirt and debris in also and a dirty engine will run a few degrees hotter. If opening the scoop had any actual performance benefit I would have done it when I first bought my truck.
