well, ill be selling it, but i dont want to sell it with a screwed up engine. it starts and drives, but the top end has a rattle in it, sounds like a marble bouncing around. mechanic claims its the clutch, but both me and my dad say hes full of it. he only did the top end, and then told me not to drive it cuz the engine overheated and the block isnt strong, and the 22re motor is crap, yada yada yada, so i asked him why he didnt put a new block in it, and he said its not under warranty cuz the belt fell off. so i told him if he had put new belts on in the first place it wouldnt have happened, and he never told me the belts were bad, so he asked me to pay him another 700. i told him he was out of his mind. not going to him anymore... beware of K&B Auto Repair in spring valley. he actually does good work ... SMALL things. the shop he outsources engines to sucks, and he knows it, and wont change who he does business with, so screw him.
so heres my problem with my yota: when its cranking, it sounds like it has NO compression, then it catches and idles rough for a second, then smoothes out and idles perfectly. doesnt seem like its misfiring at all. when you rev it, on the comedown, you can hear something rattling. im thinking maybe an oil change, lucas oil, marvel mystery oil, spark plugs, spark plug wires, before i sell it. any ideas?
and if i can get this fixed the right way before i sell it, i will do so. maybe a very incorrectly adjusted valvetrain? ill get video tonight

Consistent rattle with rpms? Timing chain?

It seems like you have a lot of issues with this truck bud, I think you are right, throw in some 20W50 or maybe add some Lucas and sell it and get a better one. Sometimes, with these old Toyota's you have to know when to cut the cord and move on. You can always find a better one out there.

I didn't want to sell my old 86 4Runner a few years back, but I had just put so much money and time into and it still ran like crap. Now, 5 years later I'm glad I did because I found my 1990 for $2200 with only 96K miles and it's the strongest running 22RE I've ever owned.

no... not consistant with RPM. just when the RPMs are falling, you can hear a rattle, sounds like a marble bouncing around. and i didnt think of 20w50... i was planning on putting 5w30 in it with some lucas.. (shop uses 5w30 in the guns, and i get it free). good idea.

I read up on the Lucas and it's a bad idea from what I've gathered. I see you're in California and it's pretty hot there right now. I'd just got get a 5 quart jug of castrol GTX 20W50 and put that in and see if it quiets it down any.

I ran 20W50 year round in my old 86 when I used to live up in Mendocino county and it's still running now with 290K on it.

bad quality, but listen for the rattle im talking about... also notice the way it cranks.. sounds like low compression huh? sounds a bit like a knock...

maybe your valve cover is on too tight? I do hear the rattle that could just be the valve train but it's hard to be sure since I can't hear it in person and pinpoint where the noises are coming from you know?

the last time i ignored the ratteling noise on the comedown after revving it... well lets just say it turned out to be that i spun a bearing on the # 3 rod and it sounded like it was coming from top end. eventually metal shavings clogged the oil hole and the bearing welded itself to the rod. but ypour problem could be a lot of different things.

I have about the same problem with the rattle, but just a little different. Mine started after a valve adjustment. I believe that it is from changing the way the adjusting nuts are riding on the valves. It happens less and less everyday and I believe it is the adjusting nuts running into their new possition. I also think that the oil galley that leads to my timing chain tensioner has crap in it. And that leads to some timing chain slap. But the rebuild kit should be in this week, and then I can get the shop to finish the machine work. Good luck to you. It could be a number of different things.

and about the way it cranks? does that sound normal for a strong healthy engine? or do i have more serious problems? cuz to me it sounds like its got low compression, but i cant take it to work and check until i get paid

I think it's cranking fine, mine sounds like that, I always figured I had a somewhat weak battery.

What you're calling the engine 'comedown' is actually referred to as Overrun.

Here's some advice from a friend:

Now for the noise - it could be chain noise. How bad is the noise and how many miles on the car? It could also be piston slap or rod knock that only happens on engine braking.

When you accelerate you are loading the top of the piston with force due to combustion which can mask noises. If you have a bearing issue or wrist pin or piston slap issue, it may make noise once there's no force acting on the piston from above, but only from below (rod pulling down vs being pushed down). Know what I mean?

To see if it is indeed combustion vs over run based, pull the suspect spark plug wires while the engine is running (dont zap yourself). Pull one at a time. See if you hear a noise develop. The engine won't run with 2 spark plugs pulled, or will barely run, so go one at a time. See if that can help simulate the noise.

will do, neo. and pruney, it sounds like it has no compression... im probably gonna do a compression check on sunday. im kinda thinking my main problem is a bad valve adjustment. will update.

update: didnt check compression, but drove it around for bout an hour today. runs stronger than it ever has. if it wasnt for the fact that i dont trust the engine nor the people who built it, i wouldnt get rid of it. at least i can say the engine runs strong!
