84 Cuttin Out

Need a few ideas.
So she runs fine after sitting for a few hours but will only get me about 1/4 mile and starts cutting out real bad and dies pretty quickly. When it first started it was just intermitten cutting then it would run fine so i bypassed the fuel filter to get me home. Still did it just the same with no fuel filter.

The timing is good and the advance is working properly. It's an 85 motor and carb. It also sounds like its missing a little bit at idle.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

check the fuel pump or the little soleniod on the side of the stock carb if you still have the stock carb its called the fuel cut solinod it will run the engine when you give it gas but if you let off it will cut the fuel off to prevent deiseling my 81 had a bad groung to the soleniod so everytime i let off the gas it died.my fuel pump was goung out once and the truck would start to cut out and jerk then die

I had a similar problem years ago and it was my cat. I replaced the fuel pump, filter, rebuilt the carb and rerouted the entire emissions controls. I was at my wits end until my good friend told me the cat could the culprit. sure enough that was it. $100 later (plus the $$$ for the uneeded carb rebuild and fule pump/filter etc.) I was on the road again.
