Unhappy New alpine head unit sub blows main fuse ???

I installed a new Alpine head unit last night, and move my remote wire to the cig lighter, the amp (sony) has had no issues with the stock unit. The main power fuse from the battery to the amp blows a 30 amp fuse a 40 amp puts the amp in thermal protection. the remote wire is going to the rear speakers for them to work, the fuse for the amp blows whether on the remote, power antenna, and cig light wires. any ideas ??

well...it seems to have somehting to do with the head unit...and as crazy as this may sound ie began to noticw over the years that Sony amps and Alpine head units DO NOT get along. I would check the remote and see how much power its throwing to the amp for turn on...beacues if tis not supplying enough power it could very well cause the amp to pop a fuse. also check for bad grounds anywhere

What do you mean automatically? It does turn on automatically with the remote wire. Switch your remote wire to your antenna or something else. The fuse is in the amp, correct? Do you have an inline fuse for your amp power wire?

yeah I was wondering if there was a way around the remote wire lol its being a pain, I wired the remote wire to cig lighter (the red wire with the blade connector) not the fuses in the amp the fuse inline from the battery

Switch your remote wire first. Put a new fuse in and swap your remote wire over to the antenna. You mean like wiring the amp to a switch? Sounds like a waste of time and effort.

It sounds to me though, as if you have a bad ground. That is the leading cause to blown fuses. Where are you grounded to? Your amp that is?

Just re-read your OP and saw that it blows on antenna too. I'd for sure check your grounds.

What do you mean by this "the remote wire is going to the rear speakers for them to work?"

You mean the remote wire from your head unit to your amp that powers the rear speakers?

no the remote wire is required for the rear speakers due to the factory amps in the rear speakers, so the remote wire runs to them since I got rid of the factory amp for them

Hmmm...that's interesting. Never heard of that. The speakers are powered by the Sony amp you are talking about, correct? If so, you don't need that remote wire going wherever you have it going to other than from the amp to the head unit.

Where exactly is your remote wire going aside from the head unit to the amp?

Ok, I got ya now. From what I gathered from your OP I thought you were powering the rear speakers with the remote wire. Now that makes sense but doesn't solve your problem at hand. Let me think...

So, when you installed the new unit, what exactly did you unplug and reconnect? Did you disconnect the amp at all except for the remote wire?

have you tried turning the gain down on the Sony amp?

what wattage is it? where about is your gain adjusted to? 50%? 100%?

what are you pushing power to, speaker wise?

and what kind of music are you playing through this amp, heavy bass music? that has long sustained bass hits?

what gauge wire are you running as the main power feed to the amp? the one with the in-line fuse?

there's a lot of things that can cause that fuse to pop. I've have many melt the fuse holder and never pop, lol, but I've found it actually depends on what type of music I'm listening to, and how much stress I'm putting the amp through

Take the speaker wires loose from the Sony amp, then make sure your ground in tight with no strands crossing over to the power side on the amp. The same goes for the power wire. How do you have the Alpine hooked to the Sony RCAs? if so unhook them. Now that the amp only has a ground, a power, and a remote wire hooked to it. Put power (12 volts) to the remote on the Sony. If it blows a fuse, the amp needs replaced. Sounds like it has nothing to do with the Alpine.

As far as the stock amp's remote, don't mess with it till you find out what is going on with the Sony. Will make it easier for poeple to help if not having to think about those rear speakers. Pics of how this is setup would be very nice.

Here is what I have in my truck now, I love stereos....

Exactly what I was going to tell him to do. Also, try unplugging everything but the ground and power and see what happens.

country and some rock

the 40amp fuse made the amp go into thermal protection and melted the fuse holder a little, this happened for about 5 seconds

there ya go
