I've been plagued with two minor leaks after the engien rebuild, that I finally fixed for good yesterday

1) The radiator drain cock

It's a replacement radiator, not an OEM Toyota one, so it's got the sorry plastic drain plug thingy on it that makes a total mess when you drain the coolant with it... But I guess I overtightened it in the past, and it squished the rubber O-ring, and was causing it to steady drip once warmed up... Not an alarming amount; MAYBE a cup full a month... but enough to agrivate me everytime I seen the drips on the driveway

So that was an easy fix; remove plug, size up new O-ring, and reinstalled, refill coolant, burp system, and good to go






2) The power steering feed hose, going from the resevoir to the pump.

I think the dealer priced it at like $50 plus or minus some, for a freeking hose that's at best a foot long... I tried sourcing elsewear, and I was running into 3 problems, First off, for my year (91), nobody listed it in their system. They listed the pressure lines and return lines on the cooler and gearbox, but not the one between the resevoir and the pump. Second, you CANNOT use just heater hose for the hose, even though it's easily accessable in the size needed; it WILL swell up because it's meant to carry antifreeze, NOT ATF. And thrid branches off of second, the largest tranmission line that anyone carried that I could find was only 3/8, no where NEAR the size needed...

Lucky for me, I was talking to a guy at Advance Auto Parts that ACTUALLY KNEW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, for the most part He says "well let's look at a different year, maybe it'll list it there". I just figured sure, let's entertain the thought, and go with maybe a 2nd gen, just for kicks. First look, we check an 86 with a 22rec... SURE ENOUGH, THERE IT IS!!! POWER STEERING RESEVOIR HOSE!!! AND IT'S IN STOCK!!!

So he went back and grabbed it, and VIOLA, all my problems are solved, for $16

All that it is is a 5/8 transmission line basically, and it's about 3 times the length that you need, so I guess you have extra, for the future, or just in case you screw up the first cut, lol







But anywho, I just thought I'd share my little experience, and maybe give out some info on that PS hose, if anyone else every needs one

 

So you actually found someone at a parts store that knew something about our trucks, you got lucky on that one. I wouldn`t trust any of the morons that work in the parts stores around here, but atleast you were able to get your two problems fixed.

 

What a letdown. I saw nothing about a rusted out brake booster getting painted. he he he


Good work bleeder. I have that same stupid leak in my radiator. I know its the o ring, I just ignore and refill, ignore and refill. I have already changed it out once, and then I changed out my thermostat.

hahaha i started with a non leak motor...and mad it VERY leaky ...i didint pull the oil pan when i pulled my TC and yeah....
