Exclamation Noise that seems to defy logic. Really worried.

Hey Everyone!

I am trying to stay calm...

a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a scraping crunching kinda sound in reverse. It seems to happen only when the hubs were locked. Well that turned out not to be true, it started happening with hubs unlocked in reverse. Then it happened going forward. At this point, I was thinking it could be a ujoint and I would start with replacing that and greasing everything.

Well, it gets more complex. The sound was horrible on my drive in this morning. So, I pull over. The sound is being made in neutral, NOT MOVING! parked! It really sounded like it was the drive line area, but It was hard to tell. My exhaust is not loose. It did not make the sound when I shook the truck. So it doesn't seem like loose exhaust or bad suspension.

any ideas are appreciated!!

If when not moving in neutral then engine. Check your belts. Perhaps a pulley bearing.

It's wierd, it's NOT rotational sounding. I'm thinking transmission. Pretty darn sure it's not a belt/ pully. I have the whole PS pulley + belt removed for that very reason. Plus It sounds louder in the truck vs. in front of the truck with the hood open.

Yeah, I think that's it. Reverse always seems to get the sound going.

Well you should have said that in your first post!

Good luck with it.

I don't either, except that maybe it can be replaced without taking the tranny case apart? Still would need to drop the tranny, though. My L52HD has been great so far...only about 10,000 miles on it though. It's what pushed me over the edge with my truck though...I was going with used stuff, cheap stuff...but once I decided to buy the HD, suddenly it made sense to spend a bunch of money on other stuff, too. So be careful!

So, how was installing it? Worth the money savings or such a PITA that it is worth paying someone else to do it?

That's up to you...I just really can't afford to have somebody do it. It sucks. Especially if you haven't done it many times. I had done it once before, and for some reason this time was much worse. I had to take the t-case off to get it in this time...didn't last time. But I know some people have a process down and can do it better than me. It's really a pain, but if you get a couple people (especially ones who have done it before) it's not so bad. It's not hard, it's just a pain. The concept is really really simple, but once you've got that giant, awkward, heavy thing, it's just not easy to get it in & out. If I had a lot more money....I don't know. If I had some more experienced people with me I'd probably still do it myself. If I just roped some friends into it who had never done it before (like last time)...I might be tempted to pay to have it done.

I'll tell you though, when you do a job like that, you feel really good about yourself afterwards.

It's not hard if you have the right tools. It makes things lighter if you take the t-case off first.
