A question for everyone that has ever tried to get more out of a 3.slow

First of all, Hi guys. Great site you've got here and I'm proud to be a member and i'm sure i will be for many years to come

As far as cheap things to fix go, the cheapest and easiest looking thing to do is the Silencer Removal as far as i can tell.

I was thinking about doing this, but decided that the engine is still being choked by the stock air filter, so i decided to put a new high flow cone filter in place of the factory box.

This puts me in a problem because the stock VMAF (Vane Mass Air Flow) sensor is still there, my question is; Is there a way to install an inline air sensor, preferably a newer, more efficient, and better MAF system?

Thanks for all the help

You have to keep the AFM (air flow meter), there is no way around it, but do a search for AFM upgrade, it is possible to swap to a larger unit that allows more air flow, and this would probably help you out as far as getting more air into the engine.

Did you search for any airbox mods?
There's a lot more you can do besides just the silencer removal.

Do you have any idea what other AFM would fit into this model? Because that was what i was thinking in the first place, Its a 6 pin plug..

I figured just remove the stock airbox and install a new high flow cone filter to solve that kind of problem, thats why i was wondering about the new AFM

First mod I ever did to the intake was chop the whole bottom of the airbox off. Lately I been playing with the AFM/timing and it has been helpful.

AFM/Timing

I been thinking there has to be an easy way to block off the resonators and stuff on the intake without replacing all the tubing. Hell maybe even fill them with some sort of caulk/silicone/cement? I dunno... just thinking.

I'm just going to bypass the resonators completely, like 100% take them out of the engine bay. But wouldnt the bottom of the airbox let in some serious garbage into the air filter? I've got an old truck and i want it to get older...

Nah, just dust like it would anyway. I been runnin like that for years now. My filters don't really get any dirtier than before really.

What do you guys think about replacing the intake tubing with some sorta flex hose like dryer hose? I know most people use the flex as a template for having some steel tube bent, but why not just stick with the flex tube?

Hm, i've got a lot of free time next weekend so i'll definitely do that.

The flex tubing though.. I think that it would just collapse under the negative pressure of the engine pulling air in. Someone correct me if i'm totally off base, but unless its forced air intake the engine is just using a vacuum to pull in air

Okay, well like more than a flex tube could take?

How's the intake coming? I just picked up a 94 3.Sl0w and I'm trying to figure out how to get some more out of it... I had been thinking the intake but I didn't want to drop $250 on a K&N if there was another work around I could use.

I haven't actually gone through with it yet.. I went to an exhaust shop and they quoted me 50$ to install including the materials. Said it would be a 25 min job...

I'm also looking at making a custom airbox to use with a high flow cone filter attached to that new aluminum pipe.. I'll update when i decide what i'm going to do

You can make an intake tube out of 3" PCV and rubber cuffs. Total cost for me was about $25, including two metal nipples for the PCV and can't remember the other one.

I thought about that, but i figured that if im going to do something like that, i wan't it to dissipate heat for the minor performance gain that gives, as well as with the aluminum pipe, the bend would be much smoother and the airflow through would be better..

Also the 2.5 exhaust, i've been looking into headers and a better exhaust system, I think im going to go with a Doug Thorley set of headers, use a "y" to go from 2 2.5" pipes to a single 3" and then run it straight out the back through a highflow cat and glasspack exhaust

The vacuum lines? See the PDF I attached. You can remove all EGR associated lines and plug the two on the TB and the one on the plenum.

EDIT: Whoops, I didn't realize that was a reply, sorry smithy.
