Bike rack into spare tire carrier?
#2
What rack? What sort of weight rating on it? How much does your spare weigh? Should we assume wheeling here? Are you thinking of fabbing a wheel mount or working with what you have which brings us back to which rack?

im not sure what the rack is rated up to, but i know i have put 5 down hill bikes on it so weight wont be a problem. i am going to try and work with whats on there if not i could muster up something that would work. i am only worried about how much its going to stick out the back.
also lloking at the fab tech bed mount

Ha, yeah, 5 downhill bikes is a lot of weight! I've done moderate wheeling with 75# of bikes on my Thule without worry. Must be one heck of a rack if it holds 5 bikes. It prolly doesn't have enough room on the backside of it- between the truck and the rack- to make up some sort of mount there? Seems closest you could keep the tire in, the best it'd be in terms of weight and leverage. I don't have any of the technical knowledge to help you out, just lots of experience of putting things on bike racks, like couches and handtrucks. Your plan intrigues me.
Pic of the rack?

Thanks Molly.
Question on the single bolt set-up, if I'm understanding you right:
How are you going to keep the wheel from wobbling? Doesn't seem like it'd be good for the bolt hole on the wheel or the rack itself. Wouldn't the bolt hole want to woggle out or ovalize, even with minuscule wiggling? With the length of the bolt needed to go between the rack and the tire it seems another reason it'd be hard to keep it steady on one bolt.
Yeah, gonna need a pictorial.

Ah, large bolt through the rack (which presents another problem) far enough down that the tire will be supported against the rack top and bottom, rubber cone shaped dealy with metal sleeved bolt hole and metal washer on the wide end that fits in the center hole in the wheel and a very large wingnut (don't know what they're called at that size) to hold the whole deal together?
Ok, I'd better shut up now.

haha so i did some measuring and the two pole things that stick out on the bike rack should fit through the holes in the rim, wich will be really sturdy and should not warble around. and i can mount my high jack on the back to!
ill get some pics up when i get the tire from lesh shwab this weekend
