Dash gauges work but lights dont come on

i bought a 94 4runner about 2 years ago from a buddy of mine, how replaced the stock radio. He told me he disconnected some wires in the back explaining that he had to take the whole dash out. well needless to say he got it all back together and never plugged it back in. ive taken the dash apart numerous times and failed trying to find this connection, he is no help at all..........im going NUTS flipping on my interior light to see how fast im going......someone pleaseeeee help!!!!

Try unplugging the new radio. Improper installation of that can cause problems with the dash back lighting. Why? Dash lights are a floating ground setup, they all connect together and those grounds are tied to the dimmer rheostat and then to ground. If the radio back light is tied into that circuit, it is hard wired to ground and can cause problems as it is in a sense shorting out the other dash lights.
