Well I busted one of the sliding panels of my rear window on my 90 DLX. Everywhere I've called either doesn't carry a replacement or says they will only sell the entire rear window panel. It seems ridiculous that I can't get 1 very small flat square pane of glass.

Am I not looking in the right places? If I really can't get that one panel, are there any alternatives? When I searched I think I saw somebody suggest plexiglass. How hard woould that be to do myself?

 

look for someone parting one out. There's a post in the classifieds for "anything you want" seems the guy has a toyota yard in Missouri.

 

you could make a plexi glass replacement if you dont want to buy the whole window assembly.

 

Yeah, I definitely don't want to buy the whole assembly if I don't have to. It's a beater truck anyways so I don't care if it looks great.

I've never dealt with plexiglass before. What would I need to do to make it? Where do you get it? How do you cut it?

 

Home Depot or Lowes. Use an Exacto type knife, score it on both sides then snap it. There are also special plexi cutters, but the other method works fine, and is all you need, especially if looks arent important.

 

plexi glass can be had at a good hardware store. lowes, home depot, a big ace hardware, and it can be cut with a circular saw if ya got one.. just wear long sleeves n paints itll be kinda like fiber glass...itchy

Masking tape helps keep shards and such to a minimum.

 

I busted my rear sliding window one day.
I got a piece of plexi from Home Depot.
I hope you still have the latch and the aluminum rails. Use the rails to get the correct thickness.
Score the line you want to cut (pretty heavily) then you can break it by hand or with pliers.
Don't drill a pilot hole for the latch, drill slow or it will crack.

Bad News:
The only downside of doing this is that the rear sliding window isn't flat, it's slightly convex (bowed outwards). The plexi is flat and will not seal properly.
It will let water in.

Good news:
Ice and snow don't stick to plexiglass.
The small gap between the window and the plexi allows the air to circulate better.
I haven't had to scrape the frost off my windshield hardly at all this winter (air circulation).
If you lock your keys in your truck, you can just pop the plexi window out without breaking it.
