22R lost compression cyl #3...?

22R lost compression cyl #3...?
My buddy just bought this 86 pickup. Its a really sharp clean west Texas rust free body. 22r with a carb not fuel injection.
The problem came when he was coming back from visiting his family in Iowa over the Christmas holidays.
He was passing a State Trooper when it started shaking and lost power, a shop in Kansas ran a compression test and #3 was dead. The mechanic said he thought it burned a piston due to a stuck EGR valve.
He's a really good guy who works hard but he just got married and doesn't need this expense right now.
Any ideas what might have happened ??
