So from the begining. I have a 88 4runner with 283,000 on it and the 22re in the truck was pretty tired. I had an additional 22re that i had pulled from a parts truck with 30,000 on a rebuild. I ran the engine when it was in the parts truck and it sounded good, then pulled it and it sat for about 2 years. So the other night i decided to start the swap. The old motor came out and the new motor went in fine, untill i tried to start it. The engine cranked over but would not pop, althought it will pop on starting fluid. I then checked the plugs to see if i had spark and found that they were not wet with fuel. This led me to believe that it must be a fuel issue. I checked the fuel rail to find that the it had fuel and pressure. So as it stands now i feel that the injectors are failing to open (electronically) or that they are pluged. I also thought that the fuel regulator may have gone bad? I was just wondering if anyone has run into this before or have any thoughts.

Your EFI system simply isn't firing the injectors.

Did you swap harnesses? You should have used the original harness from your 88 on the new motor.

 

If your truck has a solenoid resistor check to see if its good, if its bad the injectors won`t work. I had the solenoid resistor go bad in my 86 4Runner and it wouldn`t start, had good fuel presure and spark and still nothing. I checked everything i could think of with no luck at all. Just for the heck of it i tryed the spare solenoid resistor that i had and she started on the first try.

 

I checked the Ohms on the solenoid resistor today. The haynes manual that i have says that the resistance should be between 2 and 3 ohms. When i checked mine it came back at about 3.5 ohms so i didn't know if this was high enough to cause the problem. If so, does anyone know where would i be able to get a replacement.

 

I got mine at pic n pull, if there are any wrecking yards near you i would try there first, its probably an expensive part to get from a dealer.

Another question - what year is the new engine? Because the injectors changed between 88 & 89 from very low ohm (1 - 2.5 ohm) to higher ohm (13.4 - 14.2 ohms). It is a real problem using the older injectors with a newer computer - that can burn out the computer. But you have the older computer, so probably no risk to it from using newer injectors, but with the higher ohm, they may not fire. At any rate, you need to use the old model injectors with the 88 computer.

But check that there is power at ecu terminals No. 10 & No. 20 when ignition is on. If there is, the injectors have power and the wiring is sound, and the most likely trouble is either wrong ohm injectors or the ecu is not receiving the IGF signal from the igniter. (If you don't have backprobe adapters for your multimeter, push needles into the ecu connectors and press the meter test leads against those.)
