Hi Everyone,

Any recommendations on where to pick up a drive shaft for my rig. I'm in southern California and time is of the essence. I need to get it installed before the weekend ends.

what happened to your old one?

 

take out the old driveshaft if you havent already. put it in 4wd and drive with the front wheels until you can get a new one

The technical terms are not my expertise but one of the joints is very loose and is starting to break so its not safe to drive. Its coming out tomorrow.

rockauto has one for 320. i'm googling local junk yards and pickaparts places. The rigs been bleeding me lately so I was hoping someone new of a place that had good prices. This is also the first car where i'm doing most of the work on it and its been a learning process.

 

When I lived in Mendocino I had a local shop put in a used driveshaft for under $200 at the most I wanna say around $80 installed. $320 is a little much. Any mechanic an bolt in a used driveshaft in a matter of minutes. Or just replace the u-joint for that matter.

 

Take your old driveshaft to a driveshaft shop..
Or replace the U-Joints yourself..

 

A u-joint is pretty straight forward and can be done with hand tools and a little elbow grease. Minimal job my friend minimal.

 

Dude, I used to live right by Mendocino. How weird is that? lol

 

hmmm i'll take the drive shaft with me tomorrow and check. Maybe the U-joint can just be replaced???

I meant Mendocino county, laytonville actually, I had the work done by a Toyota 4wd shop in Willits. Small world though no? lol

Yeah generally speaking, driveshaft shops make/balance driveshafts for vehicles, but alot of the times they do other things for trucks and cars.

Also, just search on here on how to replace the U-Joints for a driveline.
Shouldn't take THAT long.

 

I used to have some property on Branscomb Rd. Just outside Laytonville. Yeah, it is a pretty small world. Fishing hasn't been real great in Lake County lately, though. There isn't very much water in Clear Lake, and it's winter. Maybe spring time things will pick up.

 

Wow, Branscomb huh? That's beautiful country. I used to live up Fox Rock. I used to hang out with that guy Steve who owned the wrecking yard in town. We did some work to my old 86 4runner at the time. I sold it a few years ago to txclimber on this board, he put a new engnbldr head on it in a recent thread. I took that truck out past covelo and beyond, good times. I heard mendocino has blown up lately.

 

Its definitely not like it was. I like to visit every once in awhile. That wrecking yard in laytonville always seems to have loads of toyotas. I'm still thinking about checking it out one of these days. Maybe they've got the 4.88's I'm looking for.
