Can you do a straight swap of the rear axle from an 87 regular cab pickup, cabureted, manual transmission, to an 85 EFI Xtra-cab with an auto transmission?

Did Toyota use the same gear ratios in these years?

I measured width of the spring mounts, and they seem to the same width, but the drain plug is on the left side instead of the right, and my repair manual says that the rear brake setup is different. All the line setups look the same.

Any help is appreciated.

The reason for the swap is that the bearings and seals in the 85 rear end are bad. The 87 has a bad trany and motor in it so we are gonna part it out to keep our 84 and 85 running.

The 85' auto tranny has a 4.30 gear ratio, while the IFS 87' has a 4.10 ratio
Take that 3rd member and put it in the IFS housing, you should be good to go from that point.

 

Yes, can swap and as noted above, you can swap the differential from one to the other to keep the same ratio. '87 axle is wider, so make sure you get the wider e-brake cables and brake hard lines to go with it.

 

Thanks for all the help guys. The 85 is equiped with 4.30's, and the 87 is equiped with 4.10's.

The link from Waskillywabbit got me to a site that uses the truck code to figure out the gear ratios. I am just assuming that they have not been changed since both trucks were bone stock when we bought them.

Guess would just be easier to put new bearings and seals in the 85 axle. Just have to find someone that can do all the pressing.
