Hey there folks, I have a question about a problem I'm having with my SUV. It's a 1995 Toyota 4Runner, SR5, standard, 4X4 ,V6, and 3.0L engine. I'm assuming it's either my clutch or transmission, but every time I punch the gas in (if I was to put it to the floor for example), especially on hills, in any gear my speed remains the same but my RPM's go up until I ease off the gas or downshift? I can't find anything leaking from underneath it, the clutch does feel super sticky compared to other vehicles I've driven, there is slight shuddering when I start off in first gear (which I've always assumed was normal), the engine never gets hot (or overheats), and there's no unusual noises coming from under the floor boards. Please, let me know if anyone has any ideas, thank you so much for your time!

If it was slipping that bad, I would assume you'd smell it.

 

I'd replace the clutch , *complete clutch kit- clutch disk,pressure plate, throw out bearing pilot bearing* and resurface flywheel. Might as well replace the rear main seal while you're there.

 

Could be the rod on the Master cylinder has not been adjusted since you got the truck .

Yes you should be able to smell the clutch lining cooking

if it slips in gear then that sounds like a clutch to me ... i lost my clutch in my first truck about 5miles from home some very angry drivers as all i could do was barely 20

 

If engine rpm goes up and speed doesn't while clutch is engaged, yes, sounds like a slipping clutch. First check that your clutch pedal has some freeplay - the distance the pedal travels before meeting resistance. Should be at least 1/4 inch, up to 5/8 inch or so. If no freeplay, the hydraulics may be holding the clutch partially disengaged.

But if there's some freeplay, probably clutch is toast. Marlin Crawler Heavy Duty Clutch kit and Wabfab's Aisin/Seco Clutch kit get the most mentions from happy customers. Marlin's is a 1200 lb clutch over the stock 900 lb one. Wabfabs is stock strength. Usually stronger clutches require more clutch pedal effort which can be tiring, but Marlin's customers report that it is a comfortably streetable clutch. A stronger clutch generally will last longer before beginning to slip. But the Wabfab kit is excellent quality too and should last a good long time.
