lazlow's 1989 Pickup Build-Up Thread

Hey im 17 years old and sorta new to the forum but ill post up what i have so far of my truck. I traded my cousin a 1993 full size blazer which i got for free and 1500 for his toyota with a 350 in it. Can probably imagine my excitement when getting it haha. Its a pretty awesome project for me and it stands out a bit with me living in NJ. Paint is a little meh...but ill live. And sorry for the not amazing pics. This is from when we first picked it up.

There were a few things wrong with it. The steering shaft was stripped where it connects to the box so i replaced that and had to put an extension in because they didnt when doing the body lift, had to modify and reattach the sway bay, my dad fixed the electric fan for me, and i had to get the radiator fixed the right way(jb weld doesnt hold forever). So it ended up lookin the same on the outside.

You can see some rust on the rocker panel so i picked up a new one from the junkyard for $100. More like a half a cab lol but im waiting to get it to a body shop.

Then of course i had to have some fun with it

Here is where im currently at. Had a few motor problems and got them sorted out. They had an 8 gallon fuel cell in the bed before me so i took that out and put a tank from a 4runner in there. That caused problems with the internal fuel pump in the tank and the tank was dirty as hell so i have a new one coming soon from rockauto.

The motor

Put a cheapo summit tach in after the older autometer one broke

The interior

And my welder and torches. overkill with a trailerblazer 302 but i dont mind haha

thanks, people usually dont like the colors. Yeah i was thinkin Rausch creek was the closest, oh well. This and my ranger are both my daily drivers so i try not to beat it up to bad either. If you wanna meet up sometime it would be cool cause i havent seen a yota sas up close yet.

edit: might as well add an update. A couple days ago goin down the highway and my driver side rear bed mount broke. temp fix was a strap...

so then i tig welded a block up out of aluminum and drilled a hole and put it in its place. seems to be workin good.

well a small update. I got some new tires...36x12.5 super swamper tsl's my jack was barely tall enough to get the truck high enough for 36s. I think they look pretty sweet and fit the truck good. btw mounting these tires are a bitch lol its a good thing my friend did it for free

a little update...i decided to make some tube doors cause i got bored. So heres some pictures i took.

Pipe bender im using

the top tubes, one for each side.

plate that i cut out to mount the tubes on the hinge

plate on the hinge. The plate flows with the body lines for the most part and it should keep rocks or dirt from coming off the tires and through the fender.

and then all the tubes on and fully welded. I still have to weld on my latch and finish mounting and welding the other side. I felt tube doors were a good addition for the summer and i plan on leaving it like this until it starts getting cold again.

Nice job on those tube doors! You gunna rip the front end off and upgrade to 1 tons? You're going to want to if that 350 has any kind of power...

thanks. id like to go to 1 tons but im going off a high school(well college now) budget and i just bought a holley truck avenger carb(about $380) because my edlebrock sucked at anything but flat ground. Im just running it till it breaks but im not doin any crazy rocks just quad trails and mud so things are holding up good.

thanks, ill hopefully be ordering my kit soon for it so ill probably shoot you a call after it gets here. And thanks i really like the tube doors. If i made another set id do it differently but its all a learning process lol.

and ive changed plans on the lift spring height. 5" springs plus my body lift would be way to tall for my taste so im going to go with 3" springs and maybe mix and match heavier springs if the motor weight is too much for them. Id rather not mess with my body lift because of the motor so hopefully the shorter springs will help lower the truck a bit. 36s will stay but next set of tires will be more street friendly 35s or 36s

sounds good man. you could make 3 inch springs clear the 36's, but you wont have much to worry about with the body lift in there too. the body lift will also come in handy if you decide to lift the drivetrain to get a flat belly. as for the extra motor weight, add a leaf and/or make the shackle slightly more vertical and you shouldn't have any issues.
def gimme a ring, id be more than happy to give ya a hand

not really a big update but some new pictures. pic of engine bay...its dirty and the wiring looks bad but ive cleaned that up since then. new carb is a holley truck avenger which is pretty dam good.

next is a pic of the exhaust cutouts i added before the mufflers. very easy to change even when exhaust is hot. crappy pic but im still only using my camera phone.

also went wheeling yesterday and some vine got caught under the axle and my idea was to gas it and break it but...nah it just broke my fender flare. kinda funny thinkin that a vine was holding the truck enough where it was struggling to move

ill have enough to order my sas after my next paycheck. its a good thing i had to wait because trail gear just came out with 3" hg springs which is what i want.
