not the clutch, its the tranny :(

Ok thought I had a throw out bearing going out. Took the tranny out to replace the clutch and throw out, pilot, and rear main on the motor. The dude I bought the truck from 6 months ago said he changed the clutch not long before he decided to sell it. Well he did come to find out change the clutch. The throw out looked ok, but I changed it, and the pilot. I put the tranny back up in there and WOW it makes the same marbles bouncing around noise when the clutch is idle. Noise goes away when the clutch pedel is pushed in. I did some research on here and made some calls and low and behold everything points to it being the bearings in the tranny. Now I get to either rebuild the unit I have or buy a used one. This is where I need input from you all. I am looking at $200 for a used one. The guy who has it bought the truck its in from a friend of his who rolled the truck. He was told it was a solid runner but never drove it. Do I take a chance and buy a used one or just suck it up and buy a rebuild kit for mine, and know that I have a newly rebuilt tranny that "should" last a long time?

I rebuilt a SM465 tranny that was in my FJ40 I had. It wasn't to bad, though I didn't replace all of the bearings or any of the syncros. I replaced the bearings in the case, and all the seals. Anything that required I press I left alone.

The main bearing blew out, and the gears ate up 5 of the balls from the main bearing. I also had picked up another used transmission to take some gears from, since I had no idea how bad the damage was. I could have reused all the gears, but replaced 2 of them just to be safe.

If you have another vehicle to drive, I would buy new bearings and rebuild what you have. New syncros would make it shift like new, but are not cheap.

My 2 cents, I would rebuild what you have. It is definaltaly a trans bearing. Probley one of the mains.
Im with you dude, I have an r150 that blows gear oil like one of them texas oil rigs! Let us know where you get the rebuild kit. I was lookn at marlins, but it seams a tad high. I like the guy and his stuff, but im laid off and poor!

ok, sorry it took so long to get back with ya all. I have been really busy with work. I looked at the used one and the input was all sloppy. That was a no go, I called around to some wrecking yards and found one. I went to look at it and the owner said he would let it go for $350. It still had the top shift tranny and front drive line attached. I asked if that was for the whole unit, his prompt response was no just the tranny, and I would have to separate, I told him no thanks, if I wants to sell it I want the whole unit, he said he didn't have anybody else to separate it either so he sold me the whole thing with a 90 day warrenty to boot. I plan on installing this thing this weekend and pulling out my old one. Hopefully this one sounds good. If it does then I have to decide on what to do with my old one. I might try to sell it as a rebuildable core. I have thought about keeping the extra transfer case and putting in double cases. I am not quite sure what I am going to do. My wife told me to rebuild that original one and then swap back and sell the wrecking yard one. I have the space, tools and friends to help with the rebuild. I will keep you posted more frequently in the future and show pictures if and when I rebuild

I am also thinking about selling the truck when the tranny is fixed with all the extra parts too. I know I can get pretty good money for my 85 with it being an efi straight axle. I found a really nice 94 extra cab SR5 for sale and would like the room. Not sure on that one yet, I would miss my staight axle.

yeah the van belongs to my employeer, it i got rid of it then I would really have to sell the 85 and find new work. I sold my 08 double cab 4x4 when I got the van and bought the 85. My wife and kids are pushing me to get something with more room. I really don't want to get rid of my 85. I just need help with the pressure from them getting to me. Keep up the remarks about not making a stupid mistake by selling it. That is encouraging me to keep it.

Thats funny. Na she is pretty cool with me keeping it, after all I bought her a new jeep commandor. We take it to the mountains and do some light wheeling, but she doesent want to go to Browns camp with it. I understand that I spent alot of money on a rig not to be torn up. After finishing work up tonight I had plenty of time to think about it some more and I am going to keep it, she said that was fine and seemed happy with it.

Now its on to fixing this tranny in the morning, and then what to do with the other tranny and transfer case.

I am debating doublers or just a 4.7 in one of them. Try to recoupe some money I spent on the new/ used on I picked up

well its good to see you wised up,
well iam sure can rebuild it. and sell it for more.
or do what you were talking about doubling it up..

I look at this way.. its alway good to have extra engine, tranny and transfer..

say you pick up a bad engine, but a few buck here and there.. along with a few weekends you do a complete rebuild the right way.. and just store it in your garage until the day come you need.. and then you can do a one for one swap.. and not have to waste a bunch of time and money looking for good deals and ppl not to rip you off..
