Hey all, I have an 03 supercharged Tacoma and am looking at a new clutch soon..I have a camper that I haul around quite a bit, so was wondering if the heavier duty TRD clutch would be worth the extra money..The stock one has worked fine for 103,000 miles, but just had to replace the slave and master cylinders today..But the clutch still grabs good..
Just wanted to know from anyone who has used the TRD and if its worth it..

Compare the TRD clutch to a Centerforce or Marlin HD clutch. Quality wise, they are quite similar. Price wise? Not sure

 

Price would be my selling point, although the stock clutch on my 95 lasted almost 200,000 miles while the cheapy aftermarket lasted only 50,000.

 

Guess no one really uses this clutch..Ill just look around and see whats out there..

 

get the marlin clutch, nothing but good things come from people who use em!

 

I ran one in my '98 supercharged Tacoma for about 150,000 km. Was pretty good, way better than stock. When I had to replace it I followed some other advice and got a clutchmasters clutch and pressure plate. Not sure the stage, I think stage II -- it had the kevlar pucks in it. See attached pictures, the old clutch is the TRD, new one the clutchmasters.

The clutchmasters was way more aggressive, and I kind of liked it, but it did develop a weird almost-chatter problem...when releasing the clutch for a soft start, I could swear I could actually feel the kevlar pucks. If you dump the clutchmasters, you are moving...now. I sold the truck back to toyota with only about 50,000 on the clutchmasters, so no idea on longevity.

I guess you can get more aggressive for less money going non-TRD, but it was still a good product.

 

I have a centerforce clutch with 80k+ of supercharged fun on it. I purchased the stage 2 unit so it's an upgrade even for centerforce standards. It's been many years so I don't have any specs for you. I'm very pleased....I tend to launch the truck too. Those Mich M+S really let out a howl when I dump the clutch from 4k rpm. Only clutch issue I've had is a failed master cylinder.

 

Just replaced mine with a TRD and it rocks!! It is way better than stock.

Still thinking of upgrading when the time comes.

I too am wondering about what kind of clutch to get. I have smoked mine several times now and I believe it's on it's last leg.

I have heard the Centerforce Dual Friction clutch is the way to go. Although I've also heard Marlin Crawler makes a great clutch too. By the way, what's the real difference between a competition clutch and a crawler clutch? I notice Marlin Crawler sells both...

 

I have the Marlin Crawler 1,200lb clutch and its great!

 

Keeping my eye on this thread. Going to upgrade the S/C'd Taco when the clutch goes.

 

Anymore input here? I'm thinking about upgrading too so I'd like to hear your experiences.

 

Well I have had the TRD clutch installed now for several months. I like it, grabs way better than stock did and feels about the same at the pedal..I would recommend it if your looking for an upgrade over a stock replacement. Hard to beat genuine Toyota parts IMO.

 

Are you certain that Toyota makes it? I presume Aisin makes the stock set up, but does Aisin make the TRD clutch? Or does Toyota get it from the same people that Marlin specs his kits from? From my understanding, Marlin spec'd their pressure plates and disc and had ?? (I believe same manufacturer as Aisin) build it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
