burning oil through rings or valve seals?

What's the best/easiest way to tell? I've got minimal oil leaks (one through either rear main seal or the tranny seal) and that is it (just a little oil is leaking from this spot and I believe it is the tranny), yet I'm still losing oil. It must be burning it. Would a leak down test show this? haven't done one before and am not too familiar with it, but a little input may help out push my research in the right direction.

does it burn oil every time you shift cause if its only when you shift then you need valve seals

Yeah know, I'm not really sure. I've had it in the garage for a while and I'll have to check it out once I get it back off the stands. Just curious, but what is the reasoning behind the valve seals and shifting?

compression check will show rings.
adding oil will increase the results.

a leak down test will show valves

Thanks for all the input. I'll have to take a look at it once I get it back up and running.
