Need help getting rings to seat!
What old school things have you guys heard of to get rings to seat.
This is the situation.
85 4runner 22re, When I first got the truck it was burning a quart of oil every 100 miles or so. Did a compression test, values were better than stock, did a leak down test, values were spot on a fresh rebuild, put a video probe in the cylinders and they have nice new looking cross hatch patern. However you could see the oil running down the cylinder walls. Bottom side of the head looked new also. Valves are adjusted right. It would foul plugs every 3 weeks or so.
Even with all the oil consumption, the engine only needed a few things to run really nice at all levels.
After reading all the good stuff about sea foam I decided to give it a shot. Now there is only a oil burn and fouling on cylinders 1 and 3, 2 and 4 have a nice light brown burn to the plugs.
After speaking to Tod at engbldr the other night, he said sounded like the PO did not break the engine in right and the rings/cylinders have built up a varnish on them.
Did another seafoam today. This time I put the whole can into the intake. Took it out and ran the crap out of it. Tried my best to keep the rpm's in the 4000 range. for about an hour, plan on doing the same on the way to work tomorrow.
Sorry for the long post but wanted to get all the information that you might need.
