So ive been wanting to make me a rear bumper and finally started on it . not finished yet though..
will have a tire carrier that opens both ways ,hold gas can ,water can
Been really busy but here is what I have done so far . still need the tubing bent for the side protection like the trail gear bumpers ..
copied the mounts off the tube bumper that was on the truck
steel used
3 x 2 x 3/16 square tubing
2 x 2 x 1/8 square tubing
3/8 plate
1/4 plate
1 1/2 x 1/4 Dom
1" steel bar for center of dome used as hindge
1 1/2 x 1/8 tube
cut a reciever off a tahoe hitch

Dom goes all the way thru ,welded at bottom and at the top




and just for the heck of it , the welding cart I made about a month ago..

 

Looks solid. Nice welds too. Can't wait to see what it looks like mounted

here are a couple pics of what I have done so far installed on the truck.

May change the angle for the tire carrier and not sure about the reciever it sticks out to far , I think..

still need the quarter panel protection (Tube) tied in to finish the hindge...

How have you braced the side pieces?

 

hey matt..

I havent braced them yet , i think I will brace from the brackets to the bumper.
I'm trying not to weld it to the frame .make it easier to remove..
im also going to cut the reciever off and put it in the bumper not under like it is now.

 

so I cut the receiver off today and installed it in the square tubing i also added 1/4 plate . I am still learning how to weld so the welds arent the best , just hope this thing doesnt fall apart on me .. ..
just waiting on my neighbor to deliver the rest of the steel I need ..

He is working on it. The "teaser" didn't look like much but I have over 30 hours modifying it (with lots of help from my crew). More details will follow I am sure.

ok so now i can continue working on this bumper , i recieved my bender friday and still need to make a base for it.

this bender is alot beefier than i thought it was going to be...

bought it here for 595 shipped to me jd2 model 3 with one die

dude i tried using a manual hydraulic pipe bender on the tubing what a waste of time and tubing , didnt work ..
after seeing a video on you tube using wet sand and packing the tubing really tight with the sand i bought the pipe bender . what ever you do dont believe youtube videos .

now the pipe bender is for sale .

thanks .. and a couple years but no formal training just bought a 115v campbell flux core 85 and a welding book .. i have just a few months with this new 220 gas welder and wow what a difference .
