I got a basic air fuel mixture gauge, narrow band type from auto meter.

For a quick test prior to installation, I hooked it up to the battery and the O2 sensor wire in the diagnosis port.

The reading is always going from lean to rich. The meter reacts to my racing the engine but continues arching from lean to rich.

Is this normal? Doubt it. What's happening?

Would the signal settle down if I plug the signal wire right to the O2 sensor?
