a shot at how i notched the pinch welds to get em as high up as possible










they're a little out of order, but you get the idea.... took about 4 hours in the shop, and a day in the driveway, beveling the support tubes was by far the biggest PITA, but made for quick work in the gravel driveway

those turned out great, nice welds
also nice to see some plating and gusseting, ive seen way to many welded on with out plating the thin frame. the only suggestion i would have would be to make the plates in a diamond shape, it minimizes the chances of cracking the frame.

haha for the replies, thanks for the complements:

the sliders themselves are 2 x 5 x 3/16 wall, 6-1/2', the support tubes are 2 x 2 x 1/4 wall, and the frame plates and gussets are 1/4.... absolute overkill, but i figure if i change my mind with wheeling the truck in the next few months (which i change my mind more than most pornstars change partners), and i wanna cut em off, they'll double as framerails for something, just fish plate them where i butted them together

as for the frame plates, yes, a lot of ppl just weld them straight on, and its stupid, b/c the frames just under 1/8" thick, and it'll tear before a piece of 1/4" fails...... so i made the plates to spread the load out on the rails, and as for making them a diamond, dont, b/c every corner that you weld around, thats in the middle of the frame rail, gets wayyyy too much heat, and it creates a stress point, vs how i had the corners of mine, meet at the bottom of the rail, so the heat can dissipate through the bottom of the frame rail

as for the beads, thanks, been for quite some time now, went to college for it, do a lot of fab work on the side, had a few welding jobs, and in 23 days will graduate from college as a welding engineer...

shipping, hahaha they weigh about 75 lbs a piece.... drive to PA, and ill burn a set on for ya :thumbsup:

your definately going to want to round those off or make them diamond shaped on the bottom- when your frame flexes it will put too much tensional stress on the bottom corners of those welds and this usually tends to crack frames. I repaired cracks on my own frame from this exact problem, the guy I bought it from used c channel to mount his shocks to the frame for the upper mount. both ends of c channel made huge horizontal cracks down the frame, I ended up cutting them off and fixing the cracks, went to circular tube for the new shock mounts with more than one mounting point to lessen he stresses on the welds.

your welds do make me jealous though, great job.

haha ya i get what youre saying, but i talked to quite a few old head welding techers at my school before i did sliders on my old toy, and i was told if you gotta weld a corner, put where there will be forces in more than just a linear or shear load, which is the bottom edge of the rails, where a load can pull in 4 different directions.... heard stories of bridges being repaired the way you stated to plate the frame, which endure the same load sequencing, and within a few years the "reinforcing" plating ended up being the bridges' achille's heel, and they collapsed, and there was some serious investigations done of them.....

like i said, this is the same way i did the sliders on my 87, but it was all out of pipe, not tube, pipe, 2" supports and 2-1/2" sliders,both sch40....it was free from the school and was already the perfect length, so i rolled with it... and ill tell you what, those things got used, HARD i dropped the truck on those things like it was going out of style a few wheeling trips, and ya, they deflected, but never cracked anything on the frame...when i cut it up i actually found cracks next to the one support tube, about 3/8" from where it was welded to the end frame plate, haha so ya, they took some !! and the frame held its own

its a toyota dude, dont dis em!! haha just fuggin with ya

also heard a rumor of toyota buyin back 03 n 04 tacos now, its gonna be a shame if its true....
