I like to buy broken vehicles. Does anyone else like to do this? Is this a bad idea?

not bad. take a chance. maybe you can salvage the bottom end with new bearings and re-sell?

 

I'm trying to buy a broken pickup and 4runner (they come as a pair) atm; probably gonna use the pickup for parts but if the 4runner is in reasonable shape I may fix it up. Can't seem to get in contact with the present owner though, which is a bit annoying. Not sure I'm really into buying "broken" vehicles so much as I am fixing what I have and buying broken ones so I don't have to pay the dealership with various appendages for parts.

That yota doesn't seem so broken, $1000 for something in that good condition in need of some engine TLC sounds like a good deal.

 

I only have $500 at the moment and thats what I'm going to offer. But this is the 2nd time I've emailed someone less than a couple hours AFTER creating the ad and neither of them responded. I doubt someone beat me to it both times...because they are both STILL listed.

 

If all you have is $500 this may not be the best idea. If you rebuild a kit will run $300 and up. With a rod knock you may get by with new bearings but quite possibly not. If you look a short block I paid $400ish for my last one and developed a rod knock after about 6 months. A new long block $900 and up. These prices are you doing the labor. I did and do enjoy it.

If thats a "new" rebuilt motor that is knocking. It my be unrebuildible as some less reputible rebuilders don't actually rebuild anything. So just consider thing well. So machine work is most likely needed. It can be done but just be aware of the potential cost.

I'd do it, alot of people out there like chrome, so you can take most of that "bling" off and sell it, and I've seen those rims painted black - had them on my z-71;-) and they look really good painted...

I can rebuild an engine...no problem. I'm definitely not a retard when it comes to engines/trucks...but I'm not saying I'm the best...i'm just a work in progress.

Anyway, i'm not good at saving money...and I think I jump into things too fast. I think I should just think about this first...then I'll decide.

 

Not saying you can't just saying these things only cost time and money. Thats all. Or if you got the place to store it get it then save cash to fix it.

I buddy of mine down in salem just picked up a decent running '87 for $600, sold the wheels and tires for $200...for a $400 truck with EFI he has a nice truck...I offered him $650 but he flipped me off

Toyotas never really break it is just a lack of TLC that causes problems.

Go where your strengths are i buy rusted out frames with good engines because fixing the frames to me is a piece of cake.

Not that I can`t do engine work . I can fix the frame a whole lot cheaper than rebuilding a engine.
