We go truck camping several times a year and always have plenty of whatever we need, including water. But we always struggle when it comes to an easy way to wash dishes.

Usually we do them at the back of the truck cuz that is where we have the water jug set up with a spigot. Dribble a little water on a plate, hit it with a soapy sponge, rinse, then move on to the next item to wash. Sounds easy enough except I'd rather not do them right by the vehicle - makes a mess. Also can attract flies/critters if we stay more than day. I'm thinking I need a plastic basin or two and a system of sorts to better handle. Maybe a soapy basin to soak things, then a clean basin for the rinse?

Anybody have any photos of a good setup? Nothing too extreme, just looking to step it up a bit.

 

I use a handkerchief, bottle of water and antibacterial soap. works like a charm.

The first one is full of soapy water and we let the pans soak for a few minutes (after wiping them off with a paper towel) then wash them.
The second is water for rinsing, and another wash.
The third is clean water with a few drops of bleach to kill germs.
after they are washed they dry in drying "nets" hanging from folding tables.

Fold up buckets are great they don't take up any room and have limitless uses. I recently picked up one with a zippered lid made by Kelty I'm going to use for the soapy water. I've found mice in my first wash bin and hopefully this will keep them out.

 

My initial thought about those collapsible basins is that they might have a tendency to not always get as clean or dry as one would want after using them, although I say that not having any experience with them. Obviously you guys seem to like them. Did you originally use a plastic basin and then found these to be better?

i was going to suggest just don't use dishes at all... either just eat out of the pot or if you do need to eat off something just use a few sheets of newspaper... after dinner just toss it in the fire... works just like a paper plate but is more enviro-friendly...

 

ive been happy w/this method.

they stack and hold the supplies too.


but the PULL method sounds more fun! dishes are done!

 

Only problem with the PULL! method is folks in the state/provincial parks tend to get bent out of shape by the noise...

and then too there is the PITA cleaning up all the little pieces... remember we always want to leave a place cleaner then we found it right?... that's what they taught us in Scouts...

 

I don't do dishes, thats the dogs responsiblity. He works better if he does dishes before he eats. LOL

 

Paper plates?

 

paper plates and just throw them in the fire when done and as for utensils put them in a gallon ziplock bag with soapy water shack and rinse. done
