Depends on the engine / trans combinations.

I'd think the 85's would be okay too since they're leafs up front and the axle housing has more gusseting than earlier years.

I'd want a 94 or such IFS to turn into a pre-runner or mild off-roader. I'd almost prefer an IFS 4 runner right now than my truck

Well if we are talking about stock trucks, probably a Tacoma TRD, because it has the E-Locker.

i think they both would perform about the same.

the tacoma would just be more expensive lol.

and im pretty sure that the tacoma manual tranny's and tcase's are a little weaker than the 90's style.

Swap knuckles / hubs from a 90's 2wd 4Runner in to a 86+ IFS rig, take out the front axle and propeller shaft and *poof* pre-runner.

Is that true? I have a friend with a '02 Taco and the manual tranny has had a squeak in it since it had like 20K on it, plus it has the push button 4WD, which I have always wondered if it's as good/strong.

My '92 has almost 100K on it and the tranny is tight and quiet, kicks ass on the beach, so does the Taco though. The TRD is pretty sick, rides like a dune buggy, plus has the E-locker, never used it though.

Mostly all in your own taste.... the tacoma will prove less rough of a ride than other pick-ups.... the IFS is very tought and solid and still not as bad a rough ride as solid axles....with a solid you have a tougher front end with less parts to give trouble... but the ride is purtty rough.... it depends on the engines, trans and gears too.... the 3.4 and 3.0 would pull ya alil more up that hill or rock..... all motors and trans reliable as hell...... hmm tought to say i'd have to say a tacoma is a bit to nice though id take a reg pre 95 truck...

Aren't the older ones easier to pop big tires onto without lift? My choice would be an 85, solid axle efi, easy to lift compared to IFS, and better articulation.

Of course, it also depends what kind of wheeling is being done. For mud running I would prefer IFS for the better clearance for example
