High Output Alternator Help.....3.0 ????

I was hoping someone could tell me what the best alternator swap is the best for my 89 4runner 3.0 ? Whats the most reliable way to go without spending a small fortune, my electric fan seems to be putting a strain on my stocker and if I ever run a winch I know I'll be done for. So do any of you hardcore toyota guys out there have any idea's??? They are greatly appreciated!!!

OEM doesn't put out enough amps kiroshu....if it did then he OBVIOUSLY wouldn't want to be getting a better one..

OEM is not always best buddy..i know your ALL ABOUT OEM PARTS...but in this case...OEM is definitely not better than aftermarket or rewound..

our stock alt's put out like 60amps MAXIMUM!...or you can send it to Boyle's and they can crank it up to above 100amps max and put out 65amps at idle..

im hoping the stock alt will go out on my '92 4runner so i can send it to boyle's

Oh wow i just realized he said hes got an electric fan ..... lol missed that part. Ahem... I personally would not put an electric fan... due to its engine load and reliablity issues....

I was reading what you said about the electric fan putting a load on the engine and was hoping you could tell me more about this? The reason I installed the thing was because I was told I would get better gas milage and a few more HP.....plus I liked the idea of keeping my engine cool when creeping down the trail on a hot day but I would like to know the downside to an electric fan? Thanks

An electric fan is well run on electicity and is another load on the alternator that was not there ever before due to the fact an OEM truck has a reg fan on pulley. Not so much a load on the engine... but a load on the alternator... and then the alternator puts the load on the engine... if you got a good enough alt yea you can get by and be fine..... But you can't put to big an alt or you will start overcharging and kill your battery.... Elec fans don't last as long as pulley fans.... motor burns out... they get broke... connectors... wires....switches.... grounds.... probs. It will indeed cool a bit better and thus being cooler the engine may run better.... Electric fans cost more to replace when broke.... Mileage.... mmhhmmmm not so much....

Theres always failures and breaks in all devices. Things need fixing here and there.... Some cars good 200-300-400k miles on mechanical fans and some on electric fans but overall the mechanical fan is more reliable and has really no load on the engine if theres a clutch in it.... but if its direct pulley then little load..... I've seen fan clutches torn all to hell and still the fan was on a turning..... things break so techs and mechanics can have jobs. Toyota uses alot of mechanical fans and electric fans... i've seen camrys and corollas with 300-400 and some 500k miles with OEM stock original factory fans..... same with 22rs mech fans.... they last about forever.... mine has 250k in its original one..... and we have def jack the thread from this guy.......lol

Thanks Dale,

I gave those guys a call and there very reasonable, they said after rebuilding my stock alternator it should put out 60 or so amps at idle, I have no idea what a mean-green alternator would put out at idle but going this way seems pretty good for 175 + tax and shipping! I have also heard of the MR2 alternator upgrade but don't know if it would compare the Boyle alternator........Thanks again!
