My transmission is on the fritz!

So I was driving home the other day, up a 6% grade for a few minutes when my A/T Temp light came on. Right after that my engine stalled. I pulled over, and re-started the engine, and put the shifter in drive. It went forward for about 3 feet then it felt like there was no fluid, and the car started rolling backwards.

I've got a 1999 4runner SR5 4x4, 6 cyl engine. So I had it towed to the Toyota dealer and they inspected it. They said they didn't see any leaks and that my trans fluid level was normal. However, they said they found exhaust gas in my coolant which may have affected the radiator temp, which in turn may have affected the trans cooler. They think there may be a head gasket leak or cracked head.

I've never had any problem with my coolant level or any engine overheating problems at all. Anyone have any similar issues?

A friend of mine is a Toyota tech and he said he had the same problem, and all he did was flush the trans fluid, and the problem cleared right up.
