Transmission fluid flush Prerunner 99

Hello

I just baught a 99 Prerunner. I noticed that the transmission fluid isn't exactly the color I am used to. it is brownish. I don't feel the transmission is OK for the most, but sometimes when I suddenly remove foot from gas pedal, the transmission seems to lower gear with a slight bump.

I heard it is not a good thing to flush the transmission fluid.

The truck has 83,000, any thoughts on that?

Thanks

There are lots of opinions on flushing.
I'm thinking about doing it myself, but since it ain't broke.....

I was reading this the other day:

I think this topic has been covered here a few times. Do a quick search.

Most times if the transmission fluid is brown it means the transmission have been overheated. 9 out of 10 times after you do a flush on a transmission like this they tend to fall apart and have major issues.

This best way I've found change the fluid but not kill a overheated transmission is to SLOWLY change the fluid by means of dilution.

Since the 4runner has a transmission pan drain plug its really easy. Each week drain about 1-2 quarts and replace it with new trans fluid. After about 6 to 8 weeks the fluid will have been flushed via dilution.

I've had several overheated transmissions and did this method with them and never had a problem.
