Hi, New here hope to get some helpful thoughts on this, bought a used 90 4runner with a rod knocking 3.0/ and A/T, I pulled the engine (which was a rebuild previous owner had put in) and I put in a new crank, rod & main bearings, driven about 100 miles since runs great, then yesterday I started it up started to leave the drive (20 % incline) and it was like I had one foot on the brake and the other on the gas (or maybe like it was in OD instead of 1st gear ?) I backed up and was just fine, tried forward, and same thing like I had my foot on the brake (park brake was not on) parked 5 minutes started again and everything was fine drove 20 miles (I'm afraid this is what fried the bottom end on the previous owner?) anybody have this prob before?

 

Sounds like the tranny maybe? Something got plugged?

 

If you have not already, check the tranny fluid it may be low. Mine did the same I had to keep topping it off for about a week until it got all the air out of the system. Now it runs fine.

 

I'm thinking tranny/fluid, too, maybe a torque converter issue?

But the next time it happens, try putting in neutral to see if the brakes really are hung up.

 

I just checked the trans-fluid (engine and trans stone cold) and I see 2 notches at the bottom that says "cool" and 2 notches farther up the stick for the "Hot" well this thing is showing fluid up the stick about 1" past the hot marks when it is stone cold, basically showing fluid for the first 4 inches of the stick, could someone have put in to much fluid and would it cause a problem like this ? (keep in mind I have owned this for less then 150 miles)

 

I don't know a lot about auto's but I'd recommend draining all the fluid out and putting in the correct amount of new stuff. Might not be a bad idea to change the filter while you're in there. (autos do have a filter in them don't they?)

 

Quite possibly a stupid question but it was running when you checked the tranny oil right? If so drain and refill as suggested above.

 

Overfilling an auto tranny can damage seals and cause the fluid to become foamy, which will cause shifting/power transmission problems - exactly like you described. So, yes, drain and refill to proper level with a good Dexron fluid.

Thanks for all the replies guy's....... I will take your advice and change fluid and filter, just thought after seeing all the dang wires attached to this trans that there might have been some sort of solenoid or something that was a cause for this (not allowing it to drop into 1st gear.

I did get a little impatient on my stick reading, guess I should have waited at least 40sec. to take the reading which did go down...... ooop's

Drain a little out and see if it helps.

 

I've recently ran into a couple of faulty torque converter lock up solenoids. When they go south, it leaves the torque converter locked and doesn't allow the converter to "slip" causing it to feel like you are starting out in the wrong gear.

Grab a wiring diagram / component locator page from an online manual and check the wiring / harness that goes to the solenoid. Check for any cracks, cuts, abrasions in the wire...etc. Also check the pins at the solenoid / harness connector for dirt and such since it is exposed to the elements.

 

Exactly what I was thinking. "One foot on the brake. and one on the gas *OH!* Theres too much traffic, I can't pass.
