clutch slipping? speed/RPM ratio?

I think my clutch is slipping. I have another post about clutch replacement, but I want to keep that separate from this one, as right now I think the slipping is caused by something else other than the clutch disc.

I drove to work this morning and it was about 40 degrees outside. I didn't let the truck fully warm up before driving, but on the way I would give it gas and it would rev up really quickly. I was in the 3000-4000 RPM and only going 20 MPH.

Now it seems fine now that it's warm outside. But it seems like the clutch isn't fully engaging when I let off the pedal when it's cold out. So now I'm a little paranoid and I've been playing with the clutch while I drive trying to get it to slip.

I have 30 inch tires with stock gears.. Can someone give me a good range of speeds and which RPM I should be at when I'm at those speeds (and what gears correspond with those RPMs).

maybe try flushing your fluid? might be a possiblity do you have any oil leaks that might be leaking onto the clutch/ bellhousing area?

That might be worth a shot. I have no idea how old this fluid is. I've had this truck a year and a half and havent changed the brake fluid or clutch system fluid.

Does the clutch system use regular DOT-3 brake fluid? And are there any step by step instructions online? I have that FSM that everyone keeps refering to, but it doesnt mention fluid types or how to drain and refill the hydraulics.

I would say your clutch is shot, cold or not, if you were at 3000 - 4000 rpm and only doing 20 mph, then the clutch is shot.

Last year the front seal in my trans went out and was spewing gear oil on the clutch. Happened one afternoon with no prior events. My clutch was only 1 year old at the time.

After I limped it home

I think it was only second gear. I usually let it rev ro about 2000 or 2500 RPM and then shift to the next gear.

Tested it this morning (even colder than yesterday) and it seemed fine. No slipping.

If it was slipping, you'd probably be able to smell it when you drive, or at least when you stop.

That's one thing I checked for, but couldnt smell anything. I even intentionally tried to get it slip, because I know when it is you should be able to smell it very strongly.

Make sure there is at least 1/4" pedal freeplay (distance the clutch pedal travels before meeting resistance). Otherwise your clutch is always partly pushed in, which would get it slipping.

While driving around 35 mph, put it in 4th gear and floor it. If your clutch is slipping it the motor will rev up without the correlating increase in speed.

My 4th gear has been slipping off and on lately.Less after driving 10 miles or so,all other gears seem to be ok.Is my clutch bad or going bad? Is the 1200Lb. Marlin kit the best? I will be driving normal, slowing down to merge or whatever and when shifting back up from 2nd to 3rd then to 4th the engine rpms shoot up and I lose 4th momentarily.Last night it happened and I just shifted up to 5th,after about 10 miles it stopped doing it.Thanks for any input.

I think it's just the cold colorado weather. My clutch pedal is slow to come out when I press it in when my truck is cold. After I drive it for a bit and let it warm up it's fine. I think that's what explains my clutch slipping.

On the 5 speed, mine doesn't have a dipstick. Mine has a bolt (fill hole) on the side where you put the gear oil in. I think this is standard for all 80-90s toyotas. I could be wrong though.

I believe it's on the passenger side of the transmission. I've never gotten under to look.

they dont put dip stick usually on manual transmissons
manual transmissoions typical only have a fill and drain plug and thats it..

i would chane out your master clutc cly. and slave cly.

the seals might be getting worn out.

i had a 1982 2wd pickup deluxe had to replace original clucth master and slave.. sometime in 2007 that was oringnal clucth cly and slave.. just kinda slowly quit working.. so i just replace clucth. and change master cly. and slave.cly. Make sure you bench bleed and get a vacum. to pull all the air out of the line..
