Talking My '99 is saaging, need advice.

My '99 Limited is sagging due to 150kmiles, huge stereo, waag, etc..

I have the Addco sway bar kit (amazing flat cornering!), and Bilsteins done 50kmiles ago. (I've also just ordered energysuspensions greaseable bushings kit btw).

I want to raise the car slightly (really) for looks, about 1 inch over stock. I want to keep on road agility, as I rarely do off-road, other than in the snow. I have large 275/70/16's LTX's on stock wheels.

1)I read somewhere that OE springs for '99 were the tallest available from Toyota. Should I still consider these? Will new stock springs handle the speaker load in my trunk without sagging immediately? I still do want to raise the truck enough just to see a difference visually.

) As I change the springs I am going to get some new Bilsteins or is there something else I should try. Again for on road ability (not off-road).

4) How should I raise it. Springs, spacer? Any brand suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

A company called Performance Products makes 1" lift springs for 4Runners, I would look into those

Definitely springs is it a 4runner? if so see above if not you can get leafs custom made I see you are in Canada so it would be cheaper to do it in country otherwise Alcan is good they will make them for your desired pref. in weight cap and lift. any spring shop should be able to do this all that are sold for our vehicles are for stock weight and I needed them to haul so I called Alcan and they added 400lbs cap over stock and 2" lift I am very happy with them I got ome on the front from wheelers pre-assembled and am happy with them as well!
I am sure that both coil and leaf can be acquired locally.

Cheap way is to use poly spacers too. Just an option. Check out Daystar... (http://www.wheelersoffroad.com)

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think PP coils are available anymore which sucks.

You could run Old Man Emu 906 in the rear and 880s in the front, but that would give you about 1.5" lift. This would be a nice setup though.

Air Bags?

I've heard airbags work very well when it comes to support for large loads. That plus they're adjustable...seems like a good option that's a cheap fix.

Good stuff guys.
Does it matter which type/brand of shocks for on-road performance. Or are all new performance shocks good for both off-road and on?

And is there any disadvantage to the polyspacer? Do they squeak over time?

No not all are great for dual use but they should all be good for on road use, any that is good for off road should be good for on road but not all for on road are good for off road my .02 but if you get longer shocks for the lift then they should be fine since you are not dropping it and putting shorter ones on that would be more street. get a decent quality shock for your lift and you should be good.

poly spacer will stiffen your suspension but if you grease it well it should not leak.

Leak? You meant squeak right?

If I get tall springs, I guess I should get a kit (to make sure I have proper length shocks). Is that right? Any 1" - 1 1/2" springs/shock combos recommended?

stock 99 springs came in tall and short versions. I had the short. If you want the talls be sure you are getting virtually new and unused ones, as they will eventually sag over time. Color coding on the springs is the way to tell. Search even on google and you can find this info in better detail.

A variety of Old Man Emu springs can raise your butt end. I encourage anyone even thinking of lifting to read the Sonoran Steel website FAQ section for 96-02 Runners.

Many of us are running the 890s. I am quite fond of them but for heavy full time weighting in the back ^99Runner^ and others have gone up one step to 891 rears. 892s are designed for even more weight. For ultimate lift and decent ride some Runner owners use an old front Landcruiser spring in the rears. Variations almost infinite.

I used to run 891s and had a nice raked look with the back end about 2 inches taller than front but some do not like that look. I found them overly stiff and thus the advice from Steve S of Sonoran Steel was dead on. OME springs are built for weight capabilities are perhaps not the best choice for lifting a 3rd gen Runner. Again see the website for full details. They do know their lifts.

I would discourage spacers personally but as eddie says they would be fine for strictly on pavement situations. Some say they stiffen the ride others say it is fine....

No you would not need special shocks for a minor lift. Choices there are somewhat endless as well and everyone favors a slightly different feel for their tush.
