I posted this in the camping section also but so far haven't gotten a reply and I'd like a little input before I go buy this thing.

What I'm looking at is a Wilderness Rack, 60"x48" with the hi-lift and shovel mounts, mounting hardware and specialty tool to mount on top of my first gen 4runner. I know some of you have a roof rack and am wondering if you get much use out of it?

The seller wants 400$ for it.

 

I use mine on occasion, mostly for the camp showers and tent tarp when camping. Otherwise for nasty stuff I don't want in the truck. It's been great for me, but I've only had it for a few months now. It did do a little damage to the mpg's.
It took a bunch of time to find one as cheap as I did- a Thule for $125 complete and it's a little tall but I'm happy with it so far. I've gotta get around to sticking some lights on it, that'll be super cool, specially to supplement the reverse lights which suck and are half blocked by the bikes besides.

 

Thanks Habanero. In waiting for a reply I took the plunge and told the guy I wanted it. I did some pricing online and the rack I'm getting is 729$ new, the hi-lift mount is 95$ and the shovel mount is 79$. It also has the mounting kit for a solid mount on a fiberglass top, hard mount rails (since my runner doesn't have drip rails that long) and some other goodies that he bought with the rack.

So I bought an almost 1000$ set up for 400$. Yippie for my team!

That there is the 48"X60" roof rack. Sitting behind it are the mounts for a shovel, an axe, a hi-lift jack and two Jerry can holders (one for fuel and one for water). I even have all of the mounting stuff and the little tool things. I'm going to have to do some research on how to mount this but so far it looks like all I have to do is drill some holes, push these little brass cone looking things into the hole and bolt the mounting rails down. Then the roof rack mounts to the rails.

Not yet. I need to be sure of a couple of things before I start drilling holes.

Are you mounting this right to the top of your truck? My 4Runner doesn't have factory installed roof rack so I am trying to figure out how to mount my rack this right to the roof also.
