Just bought an 1984 SR5 pick-up

I just picked up an 1984 Toyota SR5 Pick-up that I plan on driving through Mexico (sort of a vacation). I know nothing about trucks but have always had good luck with Toyotas. Dispite high mileage (197000) the engine still seems to pull well. I've had to replace a few parts but "overall" I'm pretty happy with it. One thing I'd like to improve is the ride, it's WAY to soft and wallows through the turns..hopefully replacing the shocks will solve the problem. It also hesitates at slight throttle openings and idles a little rough. I've tried replacing the plugs and distributor but it hasn't helped (any suggestions?). Also would anyone know what the offset and lug spacing is with the wheels?.

1984 pickum up truck

Greetings I also own a 84 PU but with about half the miles. I recently had the carb rebuilt and installed a header. I have the opposite problem with the ride. My truck rides hard, but i have stock fronts (frown shape) and stock rears with Rancho add-a-leafs.

I would have the truck in for service and see if the carb is the problem with the hesitation and idle. I spent about $300 on rebuilding the carb at OffRoad Solutions. That was because i needed a new super pricey float. But this was the first Major expense on this truck in the 7 years i have owned it.

I have used the white wagon wheels before with no problem, Newer toyota wheels wont fit up front because of the offset. The IFS rims hit the steering linkage and looked goofy in my opinion, The wheels looked like they were tucked way up under the truck. I believe that rims from a 6 hole chevy will work on a Toy. Enjoy

Thanks for the reply.

The truck has the 22re motor (with fuel injection), I guess fi was one of the options that year. I just learned there was also a turbo charger option which surprised me as I hadn't seen any for sell (now of course I'm thinking of an engine swap).

I think your on the right track though as the injectors on the truck are probably pretty dirty and may be the cause of the hesitation (more like a miss). I tried adding a can of Fuel Injection cleaner but it didn't help (so much for the cheap'o route). I should probably take the car into a dealership but expect they'll hit me with a huge repair bill and thought I'd trouble shoot and see if I can solve the problem myself.

Check the production date on your truck. If it has EFI AND A straight axle, it has to be a 1985, unless someone did a EFI conversion on an 84. All 1984 truck were carbed, until later in 84 which is then actually an 85 truck. Check your Airflow meter, and TPS for proper adjustment, and make sure you dont have vacuum leaks. WHen my 87 went up ˟˟˟˟ creek w/o a paddle, in ended up being the TPS and a vacuum leak around the cold start injector.

The TPS would be the next thing I'll check, I had a similar problem with a Honda and it turned out to be the TPS which needed replacing. Hopefully the Toyota part will be cheaper then the Honda part, though I think I needed to buy the whole Throttle body with the Honda.

I checked the production date on my Truck and it's September '83. I'd like to believe the motor isn't original, and doesn't have all that mileage, but the guy I bought it from (not the original owner) didn't mention anything about having the engine replaced. My truck is the 4x2 not the 4x4 and it has the ext cab (if that makes a difference).
